Default Gearbox fault, loss of speed

Hi, I have a 2001 Jaguar S-type V6.Last night when driving 60mph my Gearbox fault code came on the dash readout. Quickly afterward the car started to slow down, lose speed. I got it home by playing between Drive and 4th gear. I have had the transmission oil changed, quite a while ago because it was slipping. It would still slip on ocassion. If I drove it gingerly and didn't step on it it was ok. When I put it in Drive sometimes you would have to jiggle it a little to get it to kick in. I have also noticed a jump/accelerated when I put it in gear. At a stop, I have to keep my foot on it at a stop to keep it from going. Here's the thing. I'm a woman who has not much idea of cars. I have no dealer funds at the time. I have someone who would look and help and he is lost on this one. Transmission? I need to get to work. Any help is very appreciated!

Have the battery voltage checked with a voltmeter across the terminals with the ignition in the OFF position. There should be a minimum of 12.6 volts present, if not, charge the battery for five hours at 2.5 to 5 amps and retest. If there is still less than 12.6 volts available, the battery is suspect and should be replaced before attempting any further diagnosis as guessing on a Jaguar can become quite expensive very fast.

Check under the vehicle for signs of leakage from the gearbox as low fluid level can also cause the TCM to go into 'limp mode'.

+1 on that^^

In the immortal words of Douglas Adams:

“Don’t Panic!”

The transmission in the early models is a Ford 5R55N. It is a variant of a very common transmission of which Ford built several bazillions. Any competent transmission shop can handle any needed service or repairs. You don’t have to go to the dealer.

Thank you very much! I am putting it on a charger tonight. Also put cardboard underneath to check for leak, also. Thanks!

Another thing you can check: Hook up a scanner or code reader. See if any OBD fault codes are present. Some (but not all) transmission faults will appear, and may give you some guidance. A dealer-level scanner will retrieve all possible codes, but an ordinary OBD tool can retrieve some of them. For example, several years ago I had a Gearbox Fault message on my '02. My generic scanner retrieved a P0745 code as detailed here:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...-p0745-205599/

I did the repair myself, but something like that should not be too expensive at a transmission shop.

Thank you so very much! The car is running today without issues. Maybe it was the battery! I see no leaks and the gearbox fault message is gone. Could it be this easy? I will have it scanned. Do you think it will show since the message is gone?
It's running and I got to a very important job. Thank you!!
