Hey all,

I have a 2005 Jag S 4.2 and the front two rotors were not resurfaced last time I had the brakes changed.. Well now they are warping, grinding and squealing. Not good, A friends who has a BMW 7 series recommended I go to Sears Auto Center here in vegas. They quoted me $323 for the total job. Is this a good price?

Also would the Brembo brakes on the STR fit on the S 4.2? I believe I have 18's for the rims...

 

You want to retrofit Brembos? Have you seen what they cost? You'd probably have to fit quite a few things and of course the rotors and pads cost more, too.

 

It was just a thought I talked to the mechanic they do not have the Brembos listed in stock so I guess im sticking with the originals but is that a good price? luckily my brake pads are fine but the rotors not so much.

 

That's good to hear. They're not supposed to be resurfaced on a routine or regular basis.

How do you know that it's not just a build up of pad material- this is very common. Warped rotors are not.

 

I found a company on Ebay selling slotted and drilled rotors and ceramic pads for my S-type. I bought the set for all 4 wheels. I am very happy with the results!! My front wheels no longer turn black. Ceramic pads are the way to go.

 

I just bought new rotors/pads for my STR. I read somewhere in this forum that EBC rotors and pads (resdtuff) works well so I went with them. Here's the part info if you want to give them a try also:

I bought new rotors for my STR when i bought it and if i remember correctly each rotor was around $300 so its quite a price difference to upgrade to STR rotors.

 

brakeperformance.com is where I bought mine this week, about $300 shipped for all 4 rotors on the STR.

 

$300 for all four rotors?? I pay that for EACH brembo rotor.
How did you do that?

 

The standard Jaguar brakes can be repaired anywhere. Just be careful if you have a sport there is a small difference in rotor diameter.

I would not recommend the STR Brembo brake upgrade. It's very expensive because the spindles are different too. So it's not a straight swap of rotors and calipers. It certainly is possible and people have done it.

If fact at least one guy on the Lincoln LS board has swapped in the STR brake setup. He did it with used parts off EBay. Still pretty expensive but if that's what you want!

I ended up with non brand rotors and ceramic pads and am very unhappy with the results- no where near the stopping power of the stock Jag set up- I think it is the ceramic pads-very poor when wet, but not the head snapping power of stock- so displeased that I may order parts from Jag well before they need replacing. On the bright side- no break dust !! the stock setup was very dusty!!
Just my 2 cents ( I don't think the Jag parts are that expensive)

 

brakeperformance.com rotors my friend. I got the 2nd cheapest ones. Combined with my EBC red pads, I expect some excellent performance from the brembo's on the str. I'll report back soon with my review once I have it all installed.

 

I just got my new rotors in. I expect to receive the pads today. Got the EBC discs and redstuff pads. I'll let you guys know how well they work soon.

 

If you are fitting new rotors or Discs as we call them in the UK, it would be wise to fit new pads along with them as well. The old pads may have wear left in them but the surfaces will be worn and possibly grooved, which could scar your new Rotors/Discs.
New Rotor/Discs!! Fit new pads. They are fairly cheap to replace and will give you completely new braking surfaces all round.
Best not to take any short cuts when dealing with a critical item such as your braking system.

Guys, as fate would have it, I got the wrong rotors :-(. I though I was getting a good deal with these:

but they're too small. For the EBC routers, ( I got the slotted ones) the part number is USR1602 and they're $475.00. So almost double what I thought I was going to pay. Oh well, there goes my beer money :-).

 

You have the exact same model as I have, the 05 4.2L V8 (normal aspirated). If you have stock 18in wheels then that is probably the factory sport model. It has 2 different types of front rotors as an option: 300mm & 320mm
You will have to either measure or take rotor off so whomever you buy from can match the size up.
Outside of Atlanta we have a company called Coventry West (the jaguar junkyard) who stocks these rotors new or used. You can reach them at 770-484-6500. The price for 300mm is $270 and the prize for the 320mm is $240...that's per pair pricing for new rotors...they have new OEM pads with shims to fit for $115.

 

That's double what most good quality aftermarket rotors cost.

 

GT42R, How are the new brakes working for you? I was thinking about doing the same thing. I have the EBC Redstuff pads and was thinking about getting the rotors from brakeperformance.com. I see a set of front rotors, dimpled and slotted for $300 bucks. Seems like a good deal. The part number is RB-20018. They have a lifetime warranty, so thats always good :-)

 

Did you "Bed The Pads" into the new rotors? Ceramic pads have to be bedded. If you don't do this the rotors will glaze up and stopping power will be diminished by 30-40%.

To bed the pads run the car up to 60-70 MPH and then stand on the brake pedal to slow the car as fast as possible. Do this several times.
This also helps a squeaking brake pad issue as well. If it's been too long since you installed the parts you may have to turn the rotors to get rid of the glaze first.
