Hard reset

Hard reset
Just some info. After several trips to the dealer with complaints about high idle and shifting issues resulting from them doing a hard reset to resolve a bogging problem I was told that all was normal and there was nothing that they could do. That the idle could not be changed and the trans was not doing anything out of the ordinary. After trying to just live with these issues I decided to take matters into my own hands using just plain logic. After getting some info on doing a hard reset from the UK jaguar forum and following the procedure that they posted I was able to correct my high idle issue and trans problems. It really is like driving a new car! Much less agressive when coming to a stop and smoother shifting as well And I did it at home for free! Why couldn't the dealer just do this and fix it or did they not follow the proper restart procedure? I don't know but I do know that it worked for me and I'm not even a tech but just a gear head that believes that most all problems can be solved if you are just willing to take the time and do the research.

RE: Hard reset
I guess it is like you said in another post, there are good dealers and not so good dealers. It is hard to believe that any service oriented place would just say "uh, nothing we can do". Chumps!
Kudos to you for fixing it yourself. Maybe you should offer to teach the dealer how to do it for a fee!

RE: Hard reset
The ZF6HP26 trans that is in your car has an adaptive transmission. There are numerous software updates for your transmission as well as an adaption clear. The hard reset will leave the car back to a base line for a time.
I wish I was closer by as I could do the updates for ya.

RE: Hard reset
Yea me too! The dealer that I bought the car from said and verified on an invoice the all software was current and then the good dealer(#2) said it was not current. When I told this to dealer #1 they were at a bit of a loss. Again I'm sure they didn't bother to check. They also didn't offer to update it either! Dealer #1 also insisted that if there were any problems that the codes would show up and there were none(again stated on same invoice). 120.00 diag. Dealer#2 said many codes showed up and they will clear them and see if they come back at a later date. (no charge). This also for whatever reason started my self leveling lights to start working. If they did anything to them they didn't say antyhing or charge me for that either but I never even said that they were a problem when I brought it in!

RE: Hard reset
I have a '98 XJR that is stored in Palm Springs for 6 months. I am a snowbird. Every year I have to have the dealer do a hard reset because I disconnect the battery and the computer dies. When I connect the battery, the car idles real fast, runs OK but is hard to stop. Based on reading these posts, I realize that the dealer doesn't reinstall the latest codes. What to do? I installed a battery saver but it did not keep up with the computer demands. Is there a way to dosconnect the computer and keep the codes?
Thanx,
Don
