Default Heavy Power Steering

I have two codes for the power steering solenoid. C1924 - Power Steering Solenoid Actuator - Short Circuit to Ground and C1925 - Power Steering Solenoid Actuator - Return Circuit Failure. The steering is heavy but not unmanageable. Steering system is quiet and tight. Honestly, I thought it was just how Jag power steering felt until I found the codes. My plan is to verify the wiring continuity before throwing parts at it. Do any of you have experience with these solenoids? I read on another forum that they rarely ever fail. I have not changed the steering fluid yet but that is on the agenda. Any suggestions/advice is most welcome.

Call me Mr. Vegas, but I’d be willing to gamble on a new serpentine belt before digging deeper elsewhere. My experience with a slipping belt here, post #18:

Note how the slipping belt caused a heavy feel with the steering, in addition to low AC performance.

Interesting...I hadn't considered that as there was no belt noise. I have stiff steering and no AC performance. I haven't checked the AC yet because there's a (growing) laundry list of things to take care of before turning my daughter loose on this car. I have all the parts for a complete cooling system overhaul with the exception of a new radiator. New belt included. I do wonder why I have the codes though. I cleared them and they immediately returned.

This thread seems to be right up your alley?
Take a look;
Heavy Steering

Good picture of the solenoid but no part number?

I had the exact same problem on my old Lincoln LS but had no codes. Finally fixed it by replacing the REM.
But since you do have codes I would follow them first.

Thanks. This is me hoping I can even see the steering rack. That 4.2 is really tucked in there. Question...the answer to which will probably make me feel dumb. What is a REM?

Hey no dumb questions as there are just too many abbreviations these days!!

REM-Rear Electronics Module. One of about 20-30 modules scattered about the car. I did have an odd code nobody could help me with and that turned out to be my problem. I think your in a better position because you have concrete codes pointing strongly to the rack sensor.

Now before buying anything this also could be caused by wiring damage or even something simple like the sensor not being plugged in. So I would get under the car and take a look just in case?

In fact what I would do is unplug the sensor completely. Clear all codes and then drive a bit with it unplugged to see what codes it throws?
