Welcome.

When you settle a tad, please do an Intro in the New Members Area.

Before ANY advice can be given, we need to know the Basics.

Year Model
Engine fitted, as in V6 or V8, or Supercharged.
Mileage on suspect car.

Then a simple ask in the S Type Tech section will get lots of answers as the time zones align.

Welcome to the forum Jamie,

S-Type with overdrive. Presumably this is a 1960's model and not a modified later 1999-2009 model?

Please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Thanks for confirming Model & Year.

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to S-Type forum and added the details to your first post. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Well you need to ask yourself if that is the problem. Why did he NOT fix it?

He has no clue of what's wrong and wants to dump the car.

The general advice from long-time S-Type owners is to stick with the 2003-and-newer models. Many improvements were made compared to the earlier models. Read the sticky threads at the top of the S-Type forum for greater detail....

The story makes no sense. There's no water (coolant) anywhere near the transmission.

I'm not familiar with the pre-facelift 2001's, and as far as I can tell, we don't know if this is a 3.0L or 4.0L, but on the later 3.0L, there is a coolant sensor very close to the infamous "turret" that is a notorious leak point in the upper rad hose assy.
But as Mikey says, nowhere near the transmission and I'm not aware of any coolant leaks causing a shift problem.
