I have an S-TYPE JAGUAR. 3 LITRE V6 AUTOMATIC.R.H.D. first registered Sept.2001. it would be great if anyone out there could help me.
I parked the car last night on a slight uphill incline and selected 'P'. when i took my foot slowly
off the brake it roll a few inches backward. I left the car for a few minutes and when i returned
started the car and tried to select 'R' to reverse out of parking area. The gear lever was stick in 'R'.
I thought it was just a bit stiff and pulled a little harde to try and move it into reverse and something
sheared or snapped. The gear lever could now move freely 'very freely' between all of the gear selection.
The car was now stuck in 'P' and i couldn't move it. I had to call for a recovery truck to get me back home.
The serice man was very helpfull and had to use a couple of dollies under the rear wheels to allow the car
to be reversed onto the trailer as the wheels were locked in the 'P' position. Now the question is...
Do you have any idea what actually could have broke on the car. If possible i'll carry out the repair work
myself if it is pretty straight forward but i have a fully qualified car mechanic to help if required.
I am quite proud of the car it's in (or was in) perfect condition 100% and it's actually the first car that i've
owned and never bought a workshop manual...there's confidence for you.
Does anyone have any pdf files from a workshop manual showing the area in question.?
thanks in advance for any help.
kind regards to all readers.

This is probably a fairly easy one to trouble shoot.
Follow the linkage and see where it has failed.
Since yours is an early car it probably has the plastic piece in the linkage and that may have broken.
Do a forum search for other postings about shift linkage. There is a user that sells the metal replacement for the plastic part.
Also, when parking on a hill. Shift into park while keeping your foot on the brakes, engage the parking brake, then take your foot off the brakes. This should stop the park pin from binding, which is what is causing that "stiff" feeling when taking the car out of park.
Hope this helps.
