Default Hot hot hot

Over heated 05 Jag S Type 3.0 recently, and went into restricted mode. Replaced top hose assembly including thermostat ($265 dealer part!) and refilled with approved coolant. Car ran fine on test drive, but today went under resticted mode again, and was chugging. Temp is fine, but noticed fan wasn't running. Where do I start to diagnose this problem. I'm handy with a wrench, but have nothing to pull codes.

First thing is get the codes read, any mechanics shop can read them, or I think auto zone might do it for free maybe? I'm in UK so not sure. Or advance auto or napa maybe

Also see if you can get the codes from the first fix.
