i need your opinions
Hi jag owners, i recently started shopping s-types, a 2000/2001 fits right into my budget, ive wanted this car since it came out, and want to buy it without having to make monthly payments( no use on a 8 year old car) ...anyways i started reading up on them online and noticed alot of complaints mainly with the transmission and window regulators, i dont really care about the window reg much , but are the trannys all that bad on them? i love them but obviously dont want to be constantly stranded. so what do you guys think? im thinking after 8 years and 140,000km most of these quirks should be repaired by now and any defective tranny would have given out already.
2001 s-type 130,000km lady driven with all jag service records everything is immaculate(her husband is buying her a new one) 7,000$ negociable seems like an excellent deal to me!
so what do you guys think, after all youre the ones that can properly judge this car
i thank you in advance for your time!

The window regulators get annoying after your 6th or 7th one.
As far as the transmission, I've never had a problem with them.
BUT, if it has the 4.0 engine, run away. They have more then their share of problems. The one in my jaguar is blown, and it was serviced to the tee. My buddies parents had one that lasted 80,000 miles and it is now trash. I have talked to alot of owners and it seems 100,000 miles is the life expectancy of these motors. Now, the 4.2 has a much better set-up. If you can find the 2003 and newer, I would not hesitate buying one of those!

I bought an '01 S-type 4.0 about four months ago with around 115,000 km on the clock and already put another 10,000 km on it. The car hasn't skipped a bit and been running great so far. The only issue has been the front swaybar bushings which were worn and caused the bar to clunk. I replaced them myself in a matter of two hours.
As for the transmission, it's definitely not the fastest shifting unit out there. It seems to hesitate on downshifts in city driving. And the Reverse-to-Drive shift takes a couple of seconds. But I'm learning to drive it the way it 'wants' to be driven and not abuse it and it feels like it may last a while.
There are a few other small niggly issues like paint bubbling at the bottom of the B-pillars and some internal cloth trim coming off. But these are DIY-type fixes and nothing too serious.
$7k sounds like an average price for this year and mileage.
I've seen a couple of S-types with 260,000+ km on them which means these cars are capable of lasting...

hey thanks so much for your replies, i was already leaning towards a 3.0 since it has more than enough power for city/highway driving. so i guess that makes up my mind.
i do have some mechanical experience, is a shop manual very hard to come across for one of these? for my infiniti i was able to download it free online(cant remember the damn site anymore though).
anyways thanks again for your replies

asa tech on jags for... too long, if you have a choice, as rian said, avoid the P tek Stype especially 00, P teks are 00-02. Buy a 03 or newer theyre much better cars technically and mechanically. I dont care the price, I deal with people every week that bought a cheap Jag(oxymoron) who cant afford to fix the car with the first problem, or maintain it. Get something you can afford to maintain and fix, not just buy. And in todays market 7k is on the high side, so it better be showroom nice.
hey Brutally honest lol, thanks for your input man, ive read around the forum and your word is quite respected on here. so i guess what you say makes 100% sense, it'll be worth it to wait a couple months more until i can afford a 03'. it isnt the price of maintenance and occasional repairs im worried about ...its monthly and even weekly repairs(happened to my moms audi).it drives me up the wall to be stranded when i need to be somewhere(i guess it does for everyone).i became a greedy child for a while and WANTED IT NOW! lol thanks again for the input and i'll be on the forum with pics the day i get mine...thats a promise
