(and I know I am tempting fate) for the last 18 months nothing has gone wrong with the car. All the initial glitches were down to the faulty battery.

So apart from getting new tyres (inevitable) and a mudguard getting ripped off when I reversed up a high kerb (annoying), nothing.

I thought it was because you are now a hardcore biker. Your experience is fairly similar to mine in that the car has been fairly trouble-free once I got the warranty items fixed. So far, my only out-of-pocket costs have been normal wear and tear or expendables. The one saving grace is that the cigarette lighter went **** up, much to the consternation of my wife who smokes. I welcomed the lack of tobacco smells though.

I know exactly what you mean, Delta66. When we have no issues with our vehicles, our time tends to get swallowed up by other issues in our lives. Nothing wrong with that - the fewer vehicle issues I have, the fewer dollars I'm having to spend in that particular category. That always makes me a happier guy....

Like Mike said above, other than the normal routine maintenance I do to all of our vehicles, our S-Type has been issue-free since it required a new HVAC compressor in May 2010. Still running the factory battery 6 years and 3 months after the car was built. I've kept the cells topped off with water since purchasing the car in December 2008, and I think that small task every three to four months has extended our battery life beyond the usual span when flaky problems start to show up. It will be interesting to see if the factory battery can make it through the upcoming autumn and winter seasons....

 

I must admit that the motorbike is now far cleaner than the car and I like a clean car!

That I can also tinker with the bike and take bits off it and put them back on again, something I would never have dared to do with the Jag is appealing. So far I have fitted mirror extenders, a new higher screen, taken off the front mudguard, drilled holes into it to fit a fender extender, taken the seat off to fit a gel seat pad, fitted a top box, cleaned oiled and adjusted the chain.

However, I know the car needs its summer clay bar and wax, but typically, as it is now the only car so my wife uses it, it is never there when I am in the mood and the day is nice.

Hopefully this thread will go some way to show there are some good S Types out there. This forum may even put people off buying them as there are so many reported faults.

But in a few days I will have had mine for two years of joyfull motoring.

 

My STR has been a good kat lately. So I just post up to annoy everyone or add useless commentary. Actually when I'm "helping" that's mostly useless commentary anyway.

 

People done beetch about stuff that works real well. So yes, it's slanted towards problems. That's true of the entire internet.

 

Speaking of tinkering and drilling some holes on a motorbike.......

 

Mine has been to the dealer only 3 times in the 3 + years I've had it. One doesn't really count since it was for a low cost oil-filter-checkup dealer "special"
The first time it went for repairs was to replace the fuel sending unit in the tank. The consensus was that the previous owner let the gas tank go to nearly empty and the fuel pump overheated and malfunctioned.
The second time was a bad battery that happened late Jan. of this year and really not the car's fault. It was only 3 years old.
It's still purring along quite nicely. (Hope I just didn't jinx myself)

 

OOOOOOooooooooo, that's really tempting fate! I mistakenly made a similar comment to an assembled crowd of Lexus lovers last weekend and got a kick under the table from my beloved. I forgot the secret pact where we're not supposed to let any 'outsiders' know how good these cars are.

 

I just saw that pic the other day Rick on the bike forums for my bike. As soon as I saw it I knew it was the pic you were talking about a few weeks ago when we talked. LOL.
