Intermittent Starting Problem - Resolved
Guys,
Ages ago I posted this:
I have a slight inconvenience… Every so often the car won’tstart. The dash lights up normally, PATS indicates all is OK, turn the key and no crank. Not even a try. Battery is fully charged (it lives on a CTek conditioner). Before I start to play, any ideas? I’m thinking starter circuit relay, possibly the solenoid, it must be something electrical. There are no codes so I’m assuming it’s not a faulty sensor or genuinefault!
After a few minutes of playing, she’ll start up as if nothing’s wrong...
Well after months and months of it always playing up when I was not in a position to accurately diagnose, the intermittent-ness became more regular and I got a change to really see what was wrong. Turns out the relays for the starter and starter solenoid were faulty. (Engine Bay Fuse box R3 and R20.) I'm still not sure why replacing either independently didn't fix the problem, but replacing the pair did.
I've had trouble free starting for several months now. Happy days
Regards
D

You saving me a load of trouble and money, so thank you very much!
I had the same intermittent starting problem and eventually found your post - the only one that mentions the relays.
I took out the two relays, checked the contacts were clean and put them back in and waggled them about to ensure good contact.
Result - Engine starts every time!

Glenn
P.S. Mine is an earlier model and the relays are R3 and R15.
