Jag and repair service
First things first Merry Xmas all .
Now to my little rant about Jags service and repair quotes - just for info , i own a jag stype 2003 v6 petrol stype with 140thousand km on the clock and live in Germany -
Ive had a few issues regarding repairs in 2017 .
The first one was that my Engine management light came on and the Jag went into restricted driving mode . i didn't really know what that means until it happened to me . the car wouldn't get above 2000rpm - not good .
Anyway i didn't mess about and took it to Jag itself in the hope the repair would be minor but thinking this would probably be its final trip . Jag had the car for 2 days before i got the phone call saying that the fault hasn't been found and that they would probably have to do an engine lift and replace the usual failure prone parts - What sort of explanation is that - the cost of this could exceed €3000 .
Totally cheesed off i picked the Jag up from them and parked it in my Garage for about 3 weeks ... through pure luck i spoke to a chap who by all means was a car nerd , explained the issue i had and he laughed saying that all car repairs are a rip off and he'd willingly take a look , which he did the following day .
after 30 mins , no engine lift just a bottle of wd40 , he'd found the problem . The jag was pulling massive amount of air due to a rubber pipe having a hole in it . Jag have two pipes of different strengths connected by a rubber pipe on top of the engine which has a tendency to break after a few years - apparently its pretty common - the part cost me €10,99 and a couple of beers - problem solved for far less than jag wanted -
The second issue i had was with the coolant reservoir . The pipe leading off the top of the reservoir had snapped flooding the engine compartment - bit like the titanic - not really a big problem unless you phone jag for a replacement . They knew what type of jag i have , they spoke to me on the phone and i told them twice that i need a replacement for a petrol not diesel car - guess what they sent me ....
and now the final issues of 2017 ....i went to get an mot done and had an issue with the emission readings , with a bit of luck it passed and i got my mot ...two days later the exhaust muffler rear left fell off - how the heck they didn't see that it was hanging on by a thread is just unbelievable
Anyway have any off you had this type of experience by Jag ...

Have a read of the forum and you'll see the kinds of things you suffered - with fixes.
Also, how to diagnose things.
Get an OBD tool (such as an elm327) and then:
check for codes
check for pending codes (hope for P1111)
check fuel trims

Hi RKH, I feel your pain.
Sadly these are not brand specific problems, its a people problem.
Certainly where I live anything of a technical nature and I find myself dealing with unskilled and uncaring people.
The main car dealers only employ 90% parts fitters and 10% IT specialists.
Therefore there isn't anyone who can "fix a problem", they can only replace parts if the faulty part has been established by laptop and the correct up to date brand software.
If the software cant show any fault then they just start replacing things until they (by luck) get a fix. It is a nonsensical policy. I have a wealth of this type of experience with BMW.
This is why the residual values of premium cars collapse after 6 years or sooner depending on when the warranty or service contract run out.
No one can afford or wants to pay for exorbitant main dealer prices for the workshop and also knowing you are paying for fitters and not motor technicians.
A time served and experienced independent is the only proper fix unless you can DIY.
