jaguar 2004 S-Type rain sensor for wipers
the rain sensor on my car works! but works very badly, the screen is spotlessly clean so it's nothing to do with that, have there been any mods to this item that i can buy and replace?
Just a couple of things. Check from the outside in the general area of the rear view mirror. The round rain sensor should be visible. Try and take a picture and zoom. See if you can identify any air bubbles between the sensor and the glass. There is (or used to be) a separate transparent sticky pad you could buy from Jaguar. Some folks have has success with replacing the pad. I believe the new sensors come with a pad, which means the old pad might not be available anymore. If so, I suppose clear silicone adhesive would work, too. A dab in the center of the sensor would minimize the possibility of including air bubbles as you press the sensor into position.
Check the wiring to the sensor. Also, when you remove the mirror, there is a funky metal blade that hooks to the mirror and is bent so as to apply some pressure to the back of the sensor. If the mirror has been removed before, that blade can be bent out of shape, and no pressure is applied.
Other have mentioned issues with the wires at the stalk. They apparently come undone, but can be repaired with solder. It unfortunately requires removing the airbag to get to it, but can be a root cause of problems as well.
Best of luck, keep us posted.

Hi. Pads are available - I've just bought two (ie one spare for about £6 each, plus postage The item no. is LJD3850AA. I got mine from Land Rover Parts and Jaguar Spares | Britcar UK Ltd
Ah! I put this on when the thread had been placed in the X100 forum. The item above is for XK8/R. Might be worth giving Britcar a call, though
