Does anyone know how to disassemble the chrome sides of the leather gear knob?
The plastic coating on the leather has started to wear and exposed the bare leather. Probably time to strip the whole coating and reapply.

Thanks for the reply mellow but what I am actually trying to do is restore the leather gear knob (x202 on) which has started to have the black plastic coating wear down. Next what will happen is the unprotected leather will rapidly wear also.
To my knowledge I don't think anyone has attempted this on this forum.
I assume the remaining plastic coating will have to be stripped and reapplied. The shoe colour change packets are an inexpensive option as you can get it with the stripping solution as well as the colour but it is applied on with a brush or pad rather than sprayed on and usually in a gloss finish unlike the matt original so may not be suitable.
I may look into some of the leather repair kits or if there are any specific spray cans.
Just have to work out how to remove the chrome sides off first..

Why not just replace it . Jaguar still sells the sport R knob .
also it's the same as the 04 -08 XJR and are plentiful on eBay .
for reasonable prices . I just saw the entire shifter with R knob on eBay for $80
also there is a S-type R dismantling on the forum members market place .

 

Not for me Andy, buying used means that I may as well restore the top coat on the leather on mine.
I can imagine the Jaguar price for new!
Not one new one on fleabay that I could see to get a price guide, found a used sable colour R Type for around AUD $100 plus post out of UK.
