Default Misfire codes.

Hello to all!

Recently purchased a gorgeous STR. The vehicle handles great and I'm super impressed with technology given a 2003 model.

Do you folks have a suggested retailer for coil packs here? When I push the car it sets a P0305 code and all the associated codes that relate.

Thanks.

Mark.

For coils, stay away from no-name eBay specials, or house brands from discount chains. Many forum members have had trouble with those.

Can't remember who was the OEM supplier, but any of the legitimate brands like Denso or Bosch should be fine.

How difficult is the access to the coils on an STR? If not bad, you might first consider swapping the coil with a known good cylinder. The P0301-P0308 misfire codes just mean low power output from that particular cylinder. (Where is my soapbox?) A bad coil is typically the most common cause, but it could also be a bad spark plug, dirty injector, low compression, etc. If not a hassle to access, a good preliminary troubleshooting step is to swap coils and see if the problem follows.

Karl-

Thanks so much for the response.

As for access to the coil packs...Pull the engine cover and coil cover and boom..Bob's your uncle. I have had the pleasure of changing several in the V6 configuration. being with Ford and Mazda since 1999. That designed by an engineer that didn't have to work on the vehicle.

I'll be looking for some of the brand names you have suggested. I did move the offending number 5 to number 3 and the misfire followed.

Thanks again!

Mark

Well dip me in batter and call me a hush puppy! Sounds like you're one step ahead of me. Stick with a reputable name brand coil and you should be good to go.

Keep us posted.

As suspected, changing two coils with quality aftermarket parts did indeed fix our misfire issue. Now I get to feel what you Type R owners feel when you want this thing to fly!. The torque in this vehicle is simply amazing.

Note to self...save some money for speeding tickets.

Thanks Karl for your advice.

Mark.

Groovy! Glad to hear the good news.

Of course, you realize posting such an update is a serious breach of forum protocol. We are far more accustomed to never hearing back, leaving the thread unresolved and of little use for the next guy. I trust this won’t happen again.

For future reference, what brand coil did you use?

I want to sincerely apologize for the breach of forum protocol! I figured I would using every bit of knowledge I can gather from you folks so updating a thread was the least I could do. It will defiantly happen again

I did get some NGK brand coils and they seem to be doing fine. (Only two days and a few smoky burnouts so far so YMMV)

Thanks again.

Mark.

Please continue to break forum protocol with updates.

To the best of your knowledge, has the coolant hose under the supercharger been replaced?

NBCat-

I don't have any idea if the hose has been replaced, Thanks for bringing it to my attention. There are a few more issues I'll be addressing in the near future. We'll take a look at those in a different thread if I can't figure it out by reading the tons of information here.

Don't be surprised if I resurrect some old threads to clarify.

Thanks again.

Mark.

If you can find Denso coil packs That would probably be best. That is what was original at least on my NA V8 model. I couldn't find any, so I got NGK ones from Rockauto for a decent price and they seem fine. Don't get cheapo ones. Get good ones for a decent price if you can.
