Smile MOT failure - whats this please?

Hi ,

I have just had my car MOT'd and it failed on a number of items. The garage is quoting £460+VAT to fix. I don't think the car can be worth more than this but I don't want to get rid of it because both my Mrs and I I adore driving it. It only gets used on high days and holidays because being the 4.0L its pretty thirsty.

I don't mind tackling the work myself as I am reasonably competent but I'm not sure what the items are or where to buy the spares at the best price. As soon as i say Jag i can hear kerching £££, when actually the old girl is 17 years old now. Ideally I would like to replace the worn parts and dust covers individually if that is possible.

The failure list is as follow;

Reason(s) for failure

  • Nearside Rear Tie bar/rod ball joint dust cover excessively deteriorated so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (2.4.G.2)
  • Offside Rear Tie bar/rod ball joint dust cover excessively deteriorated so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (2.4.G.2)
  • Nearside Rear Upper Suspension arm ball joint dust cover excessively deteriorated so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (2.4.G.2)
  • Nearside Rear Anti-roll bar linkage ball joint dust cover excessively deteriorated so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (2.4.G.2)
Has anyone got a diagram to show the location of these items and how easy/hard it would be to fix?

thank you

Gary

Hi there,

You are probably looking for parts 4 (outer rubber cover RHS on diagram) and 6 (rubber for the ball joint at the bottom of the V) on this diagram:

JAGUAR OEM 00-08 S-Type Rear Suspension-Bearing XR81723 | eBay

If the covers are not available separately, the tie rods are not too expensive and are easy to change.

REAR TIE ROD LINK BAR/ TRACK ROD ARM STABILISER LINK FOR JAGUAR S-TYPE 1999-2007

I believe that the wishbones are a bit more expensive.

Gary, as Wasaloadie suggested, download the Parts Catalogue, it is quite easy to read, and identify the part numbers required. Then just google it (I usually add 'UK' to the search so I don't get all the US suppliers).

For example, the N/S (LH) rear anti roll bar link is C2C18572, so googling 'C2C18572 UK' provides a number of options, one of which is British Parts UK (who I've used in the past) who offer this part for £14.92 + Postage.

The only problem you might have is different descriptions for the same part, for example, the 'Rear Tie Bar' I believe is the Stabilizer Link XR825750 (but check against your VIN number), again available from British Parts for £29.99 and recommended to be replaced in pairs.

I've never done any work on the S Type rear suspension, but it seems fairly typical and the only part that might be difficult to fix (ie replace) is the upper suspension arm C2P13877 (I don't believe the ball joint or ball joint cover are available separately, certainly not shown in the Barratt catalogue), as you will need to compress the spring, for safety reasons at least, to disassemble. I feel sure someone on the forum will have done this and can advise in more detail. I don't know how 'competent' you are so it's difficult to advise on whether to attempt this job yourself or not.

I believe that once you've made the repairs, the suspension may need realignment (someone like Kwikfit or one of the tyre place may be able to do this relatively cheaply)

A motor shop / motor factors may be able to supply the dust covers (you should renew the special greases as appropriate since any dust will cause wear).

If so, minimal cost.

Jaguar are almost certain NOT to offer such parts.
