I hadn't been filling the gas tank each time I've been to the gas station and was told this my be the cause. I brought gas home to fill up the tank but it still won't start. When the engine turns over I smell something burning. What can I try first before towing it to the mechanic?

The burning smell is a very bad indication. I would have it towed and looked at by a qualified technician, as you do risk a serious fire if something is shorting out...
