need some opinions, and answers
Hello, New to the board just today. I have been looking and reading about the s types for about 3 weeks and am not sure if i would want this or the x type. Has nothing to do with being awd vs rear, as i do not plan on driving in the snow and if i needrd, i have driven a mustang in the snow sucessfully for a few years.
Ok S type questions, First i believe i had read that the 03 was the first for the 6 speed auto? what are your thoughts on this as compared to the 5 speed? Not a real fan of the auto's just for reliability issues (much easier for me to fix a standard). does the 6 speed auto help in the mpg as compared to the 5 auto?
Also, i am stuck on my engine choice. I am a liltte bit of a speed/power freak. So part of me wants the 4.2 ( s type r is out of price range and also insurance range as I am 25yrs old)
But the money manager side of me wants the 3.0 for economy. So i guess what i am asking is What is your REAL world MPG for those who own these cars. Not the window sticker estimate.
This is my pre purchase research, I am looking to pick up a used s type or x type in the next 1-2 years after i get my motorcycle paid for this summer. So if you have any comparison between the x type and the s type feel free to comment.
thanks

Hi and welcome..
6 spd trans rocks! You can manually keep it in 4th all the way to 120+ shift and off you go again....totally awsome... very reliable and no problems as of yet (even with my crazy driving) 30+ K miles on it now.
If you have the cash go for the 4.2...bigger is better, but 3L is good too....especially in the x tpye. X type is a much lighter car than the S so the 227hp is pleanty, not sure how she'll do in the S.....but if you read some of the post, seems that most S drivers are happy with the 3L
If you want to save a few bucks, the X type is a good starting point, looks sexier than the S (in my opinion) and has the power to please a young lad like yourself. It eats mustangs for lunch and with the right upgrades can handle the Z350 any day of the week (especially in the rain)

I agree with the looks of the X compared to the S. I fell in love with the lines of the x type. I'm not really looking into one to eat mustangs for lunch( bcuz it won't) infact the stock 1/4 mile times for a 05 gt and the 05 x with the 3.0 are 1 second apart. the mustang also outperforms on the Skidpad and the braking distance (mustang is about 60lbs heavier) But this is comparing 2 cars that are made for completly different jobs.
I would like the jag for a practical/classy travel car, and i have always had a part in me that said WOW look a jag, but i guess i just don't want a car that has no guts when the peddle is put down. somthing that if i have a car full of people and somone with their honda civic with the folgers can exhaust and a pvc pipe intake tries to fool with me i can beat up on them and put them back into their place of thinking a big exhaust and intake will give them 50hp just by bolting it on with no other mods/or knowledge about engines.
Ok, by reading your post im guessing that you have the s type with the 4.2 six speed? about what is your mpg on a highway trip? this is what is most important to me as of right now i have my jeep with 31x11.50's that gets right around 15mpg and my car is a 79 mustang that leaves the garage maybe 2 times a year.
Thanks for your help, I am leaning towards the x type... cheaper, better looking (to me) and maybe better mpg?. Now if i can just stop spending money on other toys and start saving i will have one sooner lol

I have both..And both have lots of work done on them, and yes the X in the REAL world eats the mustang....takes them right off the line and if it's a stock GT he be in trouble. Only had one beat me but he had extensive work done. (Of course my x did too---- by far being stock) the x will eat just about anything off the line....especially when it's wet. Any poor fool decides to race you after a rain deserve to lose some money...lol
Anyway, as you can tell I prefer driving the x vs. the s. I use the s to impress...lol
Mileage for both is pretty crappy if you take it easy and never gun it--- expect to get 18-20 in city and about 21-22 on HW. The S is about the same. Also, fuel, both take PRIMIUM fuel, meaning 93 octane or better....so you pay more at the pumps. I've heard people putting in lower octane, but jag doesn't recommend it and it tells you in the owners manual as well to us premium fuel.
Bang for the buck...get the X.....oh, before i forget...parts..any part is expensive and you need a mechanic that means more money. I'm lucky since i can do the work myself and make most of the parts...but any performance part you need for the x or s will be expensive. And over have the parts you will need to customize yourself.
if you just want a stock sexy car with no mods.......the X is the way to go...

racer... The stock sexy car is EXACTLY what i am looking for. This is going to be my first attempt at not moding anything on a car that i have owned lol. And the best bang for the buck was what i was searching for in my post ( just had some writers block)
Is there a noticable difference in the interior size between the x and the s.. i mean have you ever been in your x and thinking i wish i had a little more room? I am 6'3" and haven't yet sat in the x or an s.
But i guess in the end it the decision of the x or the s will be made after driving both. And since you said MPG is about the same between the 2 you have thats how i will probably make my choice.
And just for giggle's... what all do you have done to your cars? and what parts have you made for yours?
And 1 final question. is it your s or your x that puts the biggest smile on your face?

4.0 = 282 HP and 4.2 = 300 HP. The 4.2 has to be 0.2 or 0.3 seconds quicker I would think.
I am 5'8' and the S has plenty of room front and back. 6"3' I think would be fine up front but a bit tight in the back. You'll probably need a hair cut lol. But X or S you will have a sweeeet ride.

I am 6'3" tall and own an X of the 2.5 variety. Its a stunning car that turns heads everywhere it goes and gets people askin all sorts of questions.
I have to say in my opinion though, that even with the seat adjusted all the way down and all the way back its not over roomy, just about enough, but still, the sheer pleasure it gives you sorta off sets that!

Hey mustanggt I will be honest with you I'm a hair off 6 foot tall and the jag is comfy in front as long as you are a driver. My little brother still 6' tall he is crunched for some reason in the passenger seat of my x-type. The rear seat is honestly a joke but why would you wanna sit in the back seat? The car is perfect if you have no kids or at least ones that aren't over 4' tall and only have 2 of them. I love my car though no matter how small people say the back seat is its perfect for my wife, my baby (well actually hopefully thursday as wife is being induced shes 2 weeks past due), and I. You will get looks from everyone when you drive the x-type. If your going for rear seat size the s is the way to go but I wouldn't trade my x for an s any day. Although the new 2008 jaguar xf would probably get my favor!
