Default New cat owner

Just purchased 2005 S with 35K miles. I appreciate the forum this afford me. I'm from Sweet Home, Oregon. This is the most beautiful car I have ever owned...and I'm 75 years old. Car was fine when purchased...I think I have created a problem. A warning "ding" sounds five times when I enter or open any door, including trunk. Put key in ignition and it continually "dings" until I start the car. When I turn off the ignition and remove the key it "dings" for 20 seconds. I must have created this by pushing buttons and turning knobs learning about my "Cat". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A warm welcome to the forum Kandok. Sounds like a very low mileage example that you have found. Never too late to own a Jaguar.

As regards the 'ding' sounds I don't know enough about your model but are you sure that it is in Park and not Neutral and are the lights switched off?

Try posting this question over in the S Type section, I'm sure that someone will 'chime' in.

kandoc, be sure that all interior and exterior lights are in the automatic-off mode as they will cause chiming as a means to warn you of their non-auto position.

I agree - sounds like some lights are switched on somewhere. Best time to check, especially in the cabin for lights that you may miss otherwise, is after darkness falls....

Welcome aboard. You just raised our median age level here on the forum by at least a couple of years. That's good....

Welcome to the Jag Forum from Keizer, Oregon. I'm an 03 Stype owner myself and love the car. Bought it in April of this year. Just got back from Boise and averaged 33mpg driving 70+. You will LOVE your car. Love to see some pictures of her.

Cool Dingbat in my Cat

Thanks for the suggestions. Sat in the car and lights seems to go off on schedule. Still get the dinging. Fooled around with the garage door opener. Seemed to work for a short time ...now the're back again. My "Cat" is haunted and it isn't even Halloween.

Ken, when u sit inside and close the door, does the red "open door" warning light shut off when u place key in ignition, etc. What i'm driving at is one of the door's latching mechanism is faulty causing the internal door latch switch to remain "open". Let us know how she behaves after you start her up.

The "open door" warning light goes out when I close the door. When I start her up all warning lights go out. Could it be in the ignition switch itself? I have found that when I move the key to the III position and back a couple of times all "dinging" stops. I can then remove the key without and problems, leave the car, get back in and no problems. However, when I restart the car the problems reinsert themselves.
Thanks for the time trying to help, I appreciate it.

You can test to see if it's the micro switch for the key reminder in the ignition tumbler by gently wiggling the key in the off position to see if the micro switch is making good contact or not.

The removal of the tumbler itself I'm not sure how to remove. It's been a long time since I've removed one. (ex locksmith)

Ford style tumblers you insert the key turn it to the III position push in the release button located on the underside or left side of the tumbler and the tumbler assembly slides out.

I know it's sort of vague but it should give you a direction to go if the jiggle test make the car chime intermittently

Thank you Mafioso
When I insert the key to position I the key wiggles loosely and the dinging only stops when I get to position III. By giggling back and forth between positions I and III the dinging stops. I can open and close the door, insert the key and no dinging. As soon as I start the car it then defaults to dinging once again and I have to go through my giggling again. Could be the ignition. Would a locksmith be able to help or should I take it to a mechanic?

Ok so you insert the key. No chime
Turn to position I no ding
Turn to position II no ding
Turn to position III and you have a 20 second ding?

Just want to make sure I'm accurate.

I must have miscommunicated. The ding thing has now changed. It used to be when I got in it would ding for about 4 or 5 seconds, then when I put the key in the ignition it would start dinging until I started the car no matter what position the key is in. This morning I don't get dings when I open the door, I don't get dings when I insert the key...instead after coming back from the III position I get about 15 seconds worth of dings even when the key is retracted from the ignition.

What it should be doing is the following:

Inserted key door closed: no chime
Inserted key door open : reminder chime

Key turned to the right 1 click (position 2 ACC) door closed: no chime
Key turned to the right 1 click (position 2 ACC) door open: reminder chime

Key turned to the right 2 clicks (position 3 RUN) door closed: 6 inital chimes
Key turned to the right 2 clicks (position 3 RUN) door open: 6 inital chimes, reminder chime.

I hope this helps.

That helps Mafioso. It doesn't do what it is suppose to do...so I guess it's off
to the repair shop.

A good read of the instruction book might show something up. It can be tucked away in a section that doesn't seem relevant. Mine will 'chime' if I turn off the engine when the gear selector is not in 'park'. My previous XJ6 went mad with squawking if I used the key to get in instead of the transmitter in the fob. You'll find the answer somewhere.

I'm listening but all of you keep mentioning chimes. This is not the chime...it is a "ding",
"ding", "ding".

the Dings could be an indication that the shifter is not fully in "P"(park) it will ding at you to remind you. next time you hop in the car notice when you put it in park, does the P turn red?

Have you inspected the 2 bolts near the tranny tunnel to make sure the shifter cable is tightly in place?

Any oil change place should be able to inspect them for you.
