I know your struggle here...To be honest, key programming was the main reason i set myself up with sdd/ids went through the same thing of having a key cut and the locksmith swearing by the end of the unsuccessful session....my local dealer would only do it if I bought a key for 400.00 and program all keys for another 100.00....it was a blessing in disguise because having sdd has been a lifesaver because i diy everything....hope your journey ends with a happy ending

Agree with scottjh9. The SDD was and is a struggle but just doing the keys alone has more than paid for all the cost and hassle getting my SDD up and running. Plus once I had it up and running it was just too simple to hook up and check all kinds of stuff for me and my friends. I guess it depends how many Jaguar's are in your life?

A tempting thought indeed! I have a spare laptop I'm not using and could dedicate it for this use. Don't know if I'm up to the learning curve, but worth thinking about. There are vendors on ebay selling the SDD software and Mongoose-type cable, but they all seem to be selling Chinese products which I'm a bit leary of. Anyone found a good source for the software and cable?

The problem is all the factory approved interface cables are $600 to $1500 or even more. So for us DIY guys the chinese clone stuff is really the only affordable way to get your SDD up and running. An official Jaguar SDD setup will be several thousand dollars. Not a big problem if your a shop that will use the system everyday but too expensive otherwise.

Clone cables also have differences in the cable wiring. It's helpful to understand that OBDII is a minimum standard and car manufacturers are free to go above and beyond that spec to add more functions.
Here is a chart showing how the different car companies setup their OBDII stuff. This is where the clone cables get a bad name. IF your only reading and clearing codes then ANY clone Mangoose cable will work fine. Now programming keys and modules you need to have the correct cable. If you don't have the correct cable you will be missing wires so the SDD won't be able to communicate with the car properly and you will just get errors.

Also note that Drew Technologies which made the original Mongoose cable no longer sells the Jaguar version so you can't even get that interface anymore except on the used market. The Mongoose was the cheapest factory option so you mostly hear about that but see the attached document as there are 4 or 5 other devices that are approved but much harder to find. I have no idea how to test your cable to make sure it's correct but that would be a GREAT help if something like that is available?

Finally it's mandatory to have a stout power supply and NOT a battery charger hooked to the car when operating SDD. Yes you can get away with a battery charger if only reading codes and such but even that is a risk. The system is picky and the car consumes a shocking amount of DC when hooked to an SDD set up. I have regularly seen 40+ DC amps. The 12V supply MUST also be low ripple and as noise free as possible. If you know anything about battery chargers you will know they are very crude and noisy devices which is fine for charging batteries.

Note if your interested in SDD there are a number of threads in the general repair area that will help. Again SDD is and has not been released to the public. It is STRICTLY for internal Jaguar/Land Rover use. So we have no help from Jaguar and almost no training materials of any kind. Everything has been learned thru trial and error and the kindness of several Jaguar Technicians who will answer SDD questions.

Great information and very helpful. I tried to access the OBDii365 website recommended to purchase a clone Mongoose cable and my security program has labeled it a "Trojan Horse" site, so I didn't open the link. Don't know if in fact it's a risky site, but I'm not willing to take that chance.

I am certified in everything computer-wise and have been in IT for more than 35 years. I see nothing wrong with the site and I have plenty of sophisticated tools to guard myself. I tried 4 different browsers and logged remotely to 2 different computers on other networks, both PC and Window's machines and see nothing regarding any danger. I have no idea what you are using, but in my professional opinion that would be a false positive.

You could try this site

Thanks for the links to those other sites. I'm using Malewarebytes and upon closer reading says the site "MAY contain a Trojan Horse". Given the current climate of the Internet right now, I was erring on the side of caution.
