Default New to Jaguar

I am new to Jaguar. I purchased a 2000 s-type 3.0 that needs a new engine. The old overheated and the left bank has low compression on all 3 cylinders. I have located a replacement engine with 57k miles for $865. I need guidance. Can the engine minus trans be taken out the top? Should the engine and trans be taken out the bottom? Is the pdf shop manual thorough? Are there threads that show/document engine removal and replacement on this vehicle?
I have spent some time reading on the forum, and I'm amazed at the knowledge and support shown by all. I have restored American Cars for 25 years and I know this will be a whole new learning curve for Me. I look forward to the challenge. Thanks for any help. Gary

Don't worry, it's just a Ford, after all...

Oh, but if you didn't already know the S-Type shares much with the Lincoln LS of the same period (same platform/motor/trans...). While checking with Jaguar folks you might also want to look up the Lincoln guys at the same time as another source of possibly relevant info.

I don't have much to add other than wishing you good luck.

Make sure it's the same year engine you have got.
99-02 engines are different to 02 onwards.
The inlet manifold and heads are different.

Yes the engine and box is best to remove together out of the top of engine bay.

I was going to buy some engine with 80k miles (junk yard salesman said). I went to junk yard, car had 150K. Mechanic was removing the engine. I bought engine from different junk yard, which probably cheated me too.

My only input is that there are 4 under carriage bolts that hold the subframe up that are extremely tight. There are a couple of us DIY's that have used our pneumatic impact wrenches (popular brand names not Chicago crap) that wouldn't budge them.

The 3.0's should be relatively easy to pull from the top. I don't think you will have to pull gearbox out with, but you will definitely have to support it once you start pulling engine out.
