Default New (to me) S-Type - and a question

Thanks to all who answered my questions in previous threads. Today we bought a 2007 S-Type 3.0 with 22k miles. The car is great, so smooth to drive. My wife absolutely loves it.

I do have a question, though. When we come to a stop, it sounds like there is boiling water behind the dash. My wife thinks it sounds like horses galloping in the distance. It seems less pronounced with the AC on. Any ideas?

Here she is:

Do you mean when the vehicle is shut off?

1) These S Types are notorious for the HVAC gurgling after shutting down the motor (normal).

2) You may have air trapped in the cooling system that needs to be purged.

The engine was on when we noticed the sound - we first noticed it after we came to a stop while driving. It seemed louder when we first started driving, but was still noticeable after driving for a while.

We did not notice the sound during the test drive (of course), even though we drove with the AC on, the heat on, and with the climate control turned off.

Re the cooling system, the temp gauge was normal and we were driving in stop and go traffic a lot. I will do a search for how to bleed the system.

This picture is from a 2005 3.0 liter but should be the same on yours.

Start vehicle, turn plastic screw counter clockwise, as engine warms up air and a small amount of coolant will "bubble" out.

Some people have had problems turning the plastic purge screw, be carefull. Mostly on older vehicles.

I had this problem on another brand of car. Do you get a puddle of water under the car when running the A/C? If not or it's very small. You might have a condensate drain plugged or partially plugged.

I bled out some coolant, and the noise is still there. I did not get a chance to get under the car today, but I will next weekend.

There seemed to only be a small puddle when I ran the A/C, but it is not very hot or humid here today. Where can I find the condensate drain(s)?

For BMW parts diagrams, I go to realoem.com. Are there any similar websites with parts diagrams for the 2007 S-Type? Is that is what is on the JTIS site? I found the 2000-05 diagram under the FAQ.

On the 6 Cylinder cars I don't know. On the STR it's hidden and you can't get to it. So if it's not draining very well I hope Brutal can jump in and give a hint or two?

I don't have any advice to add, but I love your wifes "Horses galloping in the distance" description.

I believe you are refering to the purge canister that has to do with the emissions. There have been a very few cases where the canister cracks and causes vacuum leaks. When it cracks it does produce a loud hissing sound with hood open.

As far as the schrader valve. i just googled what it does (for my own FYI).

The schrader valve is for OBD testing of the EVAP system. From what I gather some newer vehicles do not have the schrader valve as it is not the best way to test the EVAP system any longer.

hope this helps.
