Default New STR 2005 Ideas?

HI im josh, just bought a 2005 S type R. I had a 2000 s type v6 way back when. I was just wondering what are some cheap performance upgrades available for the STR 05'. Also I have I bet an exhaust makes it sound just awesome. I can't find any that are especially made for the str. Any ideas on exhaust types and what about a straight pipe system? That's the main thing I want first for it to sound Mean. Thanks JOSH

Check out Mina gallery.com. They sell mufflers for STR. You can also use Magnaflow/Borla parts to build your own full exhaust system.

Josh, welcome and congrats! As your already aware, an un-modified 05 STR is a sleeper to be contended with. Be careful to not "Over" exhaust her. Though the 4.2 s/c pumps out 400 chp and 410 lb/ft trq., this is still a small displacement motor...torque is precious here. Pay heed to the tail end of this post. With my 03 STR; I've "Been there-done that". Begin with removing the solenoid actuated open throttle flap found at bottom half of air intake box (remove one screw), place in a K&N flat panel air filter, place in a homegrown (forum member produced) modded air intake tube. At this juncture an additional 15 chp is realized. You then may choose either a 1.5 lb. Mina or a Eurotoys supercharger pulley. I prefer the Mina because it is aluminum= easier to install. Or go all out with a 3 lb. Eurotoys pulley (requires grinding down approx. 4mm of the blowers snout). At this juncture, another 25 and 35 chp has been achieved. Next: In place of the stock cats and center muffler, install a pair of Magnaflow (or comparable) 200 cell hi-flow catalytic converters and Magnaflows Tru-X center muffler (built in x-pipe). Maintain the stock 2.25" exhaust pipe diameter. Here, you'll notice quicker throttle response, additional 10 chp and torque, and more exhaust noise to boot. Stop here! Unless you want much more noise, don't further mess with the exhaust. Though low restriction mufflers may allow a few more ponies (5-10), loss of low end torque and annoying cabin resonance may drive you back in the other direction. Drive her around town, highway, and uphill in high gear at approx. 50 mph. Consult with us before any step in modding. Welcome again! It's always exciting to know another "S" or STR is with us.

I would start with fuel filter change, spark plugs and of course, oil change. I recommend NAPA gold oil filter. Cabin air filter change is also a good idea. Btw there are vids here on how to change fuel filter, cabin air filter, oil change and spark plugs. If you do them yourself your looking at a 200 dollar or more save.

Do not mod anything until you have a good handle on ALL the maintenance!!

Change the transmission fluid, pan/filter, sleeve, bolts. Reflash the TCM to fight the "Lurch". If you have not heard of the lurch. Look for it and read the website.

Change SC fluid.

Change rear end fluid.

Change plugs and check for oil in plug wells.

Flush brake fluid. Check pads as the rotors are very expensive. Be sure and check the special emergency brake pads too.

Check cooling system and change antifreeze. Check and change DCCV if not already done. Check that the heat and cool is working properly on both sides of the car. Top tank is leak prone and if cracked should be changed.

Check tires for inner edge wear. Wrong specs were used for S type alignment for a long time. Be sure and use the proper ones posted here.

Get and install the JTIS and the JEPC. You now have the dealers parts catalog and service manual.

The STR was an expensive car when new. It gets no cheaper to drive and maintain even though the car itself is not worth much at this time!

Default wow

Wow that's tons of stuff. I will try to change every fluid I can think of and plugs. I'll have to do some research on the other stuff you mentioned. unfortuantley i am not mechanically inclined but hope to learn and try to start doing this on my own. Thanks for the recommendations.

After I do the maintainance things I think the minnagallery site seems like the all in one shopping site and isnt expensive at all, plus I listened to clips of the exhaust and sounds great. I am just going to start with intake kit and full exhaust and pulley will follow when i get everything in order. Thanks again for the info very helpful I never would of thought of these things. I plan on keeping this car for a long long time so I really want the maintnance end to be great.

Josh, pay heed to clubairth, etc. I took it that your 05 STR was ready for modding. If maintenace is first on the menu, then definitely do this prior to modding.

Default Oil

For oil my consensus is that castrol edge is good. And also I heard that messing with transmission service isn't good you should just leave the tranny alone. Is that a misconception for this car?

Castrol is a very good oil and swapping in trans. fluid is good too. Dig into the threads that cover trans. fluid change.

Default Just got car READ

Ok Just got delivery of car. The car is nice. Three things.

1. GPS/RADIO TV screen keeps moving down like it's scrolling but the same page over and over. like it's supposed to be still but i have to tap the things while its moving down. Like an old tuner tv used to do until you got the right frequency.??????

2. Took car around the block like 3 times only , smelled kind of like burning rubber under the hood a little. And know I didn't burn the tires lol.

3. I can't really hear the supercharger at all, I didn't gun but got on a little and just engine. It is an R model engine and everything. Had tons of pop but couldnt hear ANY wine.

4. And screen says parking brake fault when I tried to put park brake on.

thats 4 sorry, ANY IDEAS GUYS?? GOT to take it in to jag dealership asap.

# 2 you think may be some type of fluid leak making it smell like rubber.

Default supercharger

OK. I did step on it and still no wine like ive heard in the 100's of STR sound clips on youtube. It's still moves like hell but I can't hear it. Could it need supercharger oil or is it seized up, and would the car still run fast and normal if it was blown?

Mina Gallery sounds GREAT, not too loud, not too quiet - just perfect. Smooth tone with just a hint of rumbling! I get so many compliments on it.

josh, the 05 STR is a quiet car. The STR's on Youtube run the modded air intake tube = noticeable blower whine.

#1 never heard that fault before

#2 find it & fix it, it'll only get more expensive

#3 leave it till you've fixed #2 & #4

#4 see #2 but could be failing battery
