Default Oil Problem (serious)

Hi All

I have a 4.0 litre V8 S-Type 2000. It has had an oil problem for quite some time.

Oil appears to get into the air filter, and then leaks from there down the engine onto the floor near the nearside front wheel (left hand front wheel when sat in the driving seat).

It also blows quite a lot of blue smoke out of the exhaust when I start the car in the morning. If the car has been on a long journey, or has been driven slightly harder, the amount of smoke is much worse.

I took the car to a Jaguar main dealer over a year ago, and the guy had a quick look and said it was down to engine wear, and the only thing to do is to use thicker oil, and not fill it so full.

So, since then, I have been using 10W40 and then 15W40. I have tried 20W50, but I think this is too thick, as I tend to get a bit of a top end rattle, as if the oil isn't getting to the top of the engine properly.

I first noticed this after I had an oil change. I started to get a very slight top end tapping, so I used an engine flush, changed the oil filter and replaced the oil with the recommended 5W30. From this point, oil leaked terribly.

I recently dropped all the oil out, and replaced with 15W-40. For about a week, I didn't get any dropped oil on the floor, or any blue smoke. It is now, however as bad as ever.

I have been just living with this, but I was speaking to a couple of guys today who said it sounds like a blocked oil breather.

Is this a possibility?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

SS

I beleive that steps 11-14 in the link below on cleaning the part-load breather should be similar for your car.

Thanks very much for the ver quick and useful replies. Is it possible that the "Part Load Breather" eing blocked is causing me all these problems?

I will try and source engine restore over here in England, but failing that, I am over in the States in about 4 weeks, so will look for some when I am there.

Many Thanks
