Ooops, I broke coolant sender. Now what?
Hello.
While attempting to change the serpantine belt on my 03 S-type 4.2, the wrench slipped off, hit and broke the H2O sensor. The car now runs in limp or "restricted performance" mode and showing code PO117. I can't see how the sensor comes out as it doesn't appear threaded. As well, do I need a special tool? Once out, can I buy just the sensor? Looking online it is unclear as to if you can buy just the sensor or you must replace the entire thermostat housing. Am I opening a can of worms here as a DIYer?
Thanks.

Well if you slide off the rubber boot which covers the lower part of rhe sensor all will be revealed--the sensor is indeed a screw fit in the plastic housing and can be removed using a 19mm wrench or deep socket.
Sensors are on e-bay.com in the $20 range.
You should be able to effect the change, but I recommend you feel comfortable with your own skills and knowledge.Check the JTIS if not sure

Here's the JTIS section on ECT Sensor removal and refitting on your 4.2:
JTIS - S TYPE 4-2 Engine Coolant temperature Sensor.pdf
As you've had the engine running, give it time to cool right down before starting to remove the broken sensor..
