Default Paint job question...

Hey guys had my car repainted a few weeks ago with its original oem Aspen Green color. The top of the car's clear coat was beginning to come off. So I had the work done, but now I noticed that there are lines on the areas where the clear coat was peeling. It almost looks like they are lines from the sanding. You cannot really see them from distance, you really need to be up and personal to see them. They are like circular lines and are only in the areas where the clear coat was peeling.... The guy at the shop said a compound would get rid of this and he said the car has to dry for a few weeks, any of this true?

after doing some more research I came to find I do not believe that it is actual swirlmarks. Almost seems like a overspray with swirls in it. And it is only in the area of where it was sanded where the clear coat was peeling. It is like a large circle that the circle is in the shape of swirl lines, not a line going across, but like say if you were to draw and circle in swirls. I will try and take a good picture tomorrow to show you exactly what I mean. thanks.

here is a link to something similar that is going on with me just not as bad. But if you see the darker red circle lines that outline to white part, is pretty much what I am talking about. Mine is green paint and has those outer looking lines in circles in areas where the clear was peeling. So IDK if its called overspray or swirls.

That sounds like poor prep work to me. They didn't sand properly where the clear was peeling and it is showing through the paint. I would be complaining quite loudly. When you have a car repainted you expect it to look no less than minty.

Big Walleye is right that it wasn't prepped correctly. Actually it sounds like they did not seal for a waterbase coat. Hence you can see the actual sand marks through the paint. In California we cannot use thinner based paints, so everything here is waterbased. The only cure is to strip the area, prep it, primer it, block it and seal it. Don't let them talk you into colorsanding it. Colorsanding will help with the clear, but the condition you are talking about is below base coat.

How much did you pay?

If I paid $5000 I'd be complaining a lot! If I paid $1200 I wouldn't have much to complain about.

im gonna get some pics up in a bit and tell you excatly what I am talking about if I can get them to come up good. I paid $850 to do the top and the rear bumper. They blended the top in.

Without looking at it, sounds like a respray with no/minimal prep at that price.

Blending and refinishing are 2 different processes. In blending, the clear is applied to the panel adjacent to the painted panel to match the gloss. Refinish is when the base coat is resprayed followed by clear coat ( depending on whether its 2 stage or 3 stage). Your car is a 2 stage - base coat + clear.

What it sounds like is they spotted the top, i.e. painted only portions of it not complete top. That is the minimal approach. Perhaps those swirl marks are from prepping your original base coat.

Here's my 2 centimos, if they matched the paint on the top and the bumper and all you see are the swirl marks in the old base coat I wouldn't really complain for $850.

Everyone is saying bad prep work. I actually am wondering if they even re-painted it or just tried to polish out the oxidation!

I've detailed cars for over 25 years and I know I can get a paint job that looks like its gone back in almost new shape.

Are you SURE they repainted the car?
