is this zf6HP26 worth it?
No I don't need one but believe i will soon, starting to slip on 3-4 up shift and harsh 2-1 lurch did all remedies reflash , panfluid etc, it had low fluid for a while think it jacked it up. I believe it is new, has all the original packaging stickers and such and looks obviously new, besides if it isn't ill just stop the payment through paypal, im covered through that. But pretty sure it is and i would pick up in person anyway.
The early ones had torque convertors that prematurely failed. That would be my only concern. My 2003 failed at around 35K miles. Torque convertor replaced under warranty. It was a common problem in 2003s.

I don't know how to read the transmission numbers? Does the number indicate that it is for an STR?

VERY nice score,
wouldn't hesitate for a second to take it at that price if it is in fact in original crate,
edit:
was the ZF different between any of the 3.0 4.2 and 4.2SC cars?
I always thought the ZF was identical across the board, no? only difference between the cars is their final drive...

hmm, 8X23- etc looks like an XF part #
If it's a ZF for an XF I don't know what's different. May only be the software, and that can be reflashed. If that's all it is...
I think (but am not certain) that the ZF 6HP26 boxes for the various S-Types are only different in the software that is preloaded into the TCM - neglecting fixes and tweaks done as ZF made more and more boxes.

Well long story short I was going to pick it up cuz it said the item was near me and then the guy said it was gonna take 2 weeks to get here and insisted on freighting to my nearest port. Too much confusion when Im only buying it as a back up LOL. Transaction cancelled!

When I sold my Saab 2 years ago, it was amazing how many people wanted to pay by PayPal and then come around and pick up the car in person. Fortunately, PayPal had warned me not to do it that way.
Yes the basic transmission is a 6HP26 but it is different between the different engines. The STR has the highest rated version and has more clutches inside to handle the higher torque rating of the 4.2L SC Engine. I am sure there are more difference than that too.
Example; I would not use a ZF from a 4.2L NA behind the SC version. It would bolt up and work but I don't think it would last unless you were real gentle with it.
