Possible Purchase
Hi guys, my name is Todd and I'm from Western PA. I was browsing the internet this morning and stumbled across a used X-Type. It is a 2003 2.5 5 speed manual. Black on Black. It has 42k miles on the clock. I'm new to the world of Jags, I've always admired their class and style however. I haven't seen the vehicle in person, my Dad is supposed to look at it later this afternoon for me since I'm over an hour away from it at school.
I currently drive a 2000 Ford Explorer with 90k miles. Its getting time to replace it, and with gas over $3/gallon its 5.0L V8 isn't being friendly to my wallet.
I've done very little research on these vehicles, like I said I just became intrigued by the model I found this morning. I see Edmunds rates the X at 29mpg highway, is this realistic and achievable? I do understand that a lot is dependent on each persons driving style. What are areas to focus on as far as problems go? I know it is AWD, but will it also be equipped with traction/stability control?
Here's a link to the vehicle.
Let me know what you think of this example and if you think it is a decent deal! I'd also appreciate any links to a buyers guide or anything along those lines.
Thanks!
EDIT- I do apologize, I botched up my posting and stuck this in the S-Type forum.

Test drive it at dusk and if its raining even better this way you can check all lighting, wipers and leaks don't forget to turn on A/C even though its 10 degrees. Have a mechanic lift it and give it the once over underneath and check for any recent codes. One thing to remember its a Jag and it will cost more for parts and repairs.

RE: Possible Purchase
How prone are they to breaking. I'm rather mechanically inclined so most repairs on the Explorer were a no brainer. Do they use the standard OBDII computer system for codes? If this does go through I will probably get a 1 year warranty for it. I purchased my Explorer at this dear and got a decent warranty for it and it has been worth the money so far.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

RE: Possible Purchase
Just talked to my dad. He took it for a spin. Said there's a vibration when coasting, mainly up through the gearshifter. Sounds like it has some issues and someone traded it once it was out of warranty. Pretty sure I'm going to steer clear of it unless you guys can convince me otherwise.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I would have a mechanic look at it. Could be propshaft if it is coming through shifter. Could also be trans. Could be tires. Could be brakes. Without being there, hard to say. There is alot of well priced X-Types out there.
Did you ask Dave the details of the 90 day, 3000 mile warranty? If he will cover mechanical including transmission, maybe worth buying. Depends what they will warranty.
Car missed its factory services, but doesnt mean it didnt get things done elsewhere. Didnt go to the dealer much, so either didnt have problems, or previous owner didnt care.
Good luck, hope to have you as a member of the family either with this X or something else.

As FJT stated above, if you've fallen in love with the styling and look of the X-type, there are a great many of them in the used market these days, and that makes for great negotations from the dealers. There are color combinations out there that you may not have even dreamed about that will fit you perfectly, black on tan, blue on grey...different wheel options, NAV systems, etc.
I did a cars.com search for you, using a parameter of within 250 miles of the dealer that has that X u linked us, and over 300 vehicles from 2003-2005 model years were available. Alot of 2004s just $1000 more than that 2003 you showed us. If you are picky about your car, (as most of us are around here) driving 3 hours to get one is a worthy sacrifice. You may get lucky and find a vehicle that has the Jag Select Edition warranty, which is pretty good...and no need to buy another one. BTW, if you ask FJT really nicely via PM, i'm sure he wouldn't mind looking up any potential candidates for you to see if there has been any major work done, warranty work performed, or has been well maintained by a Jag dealer.
Buying used vehicles, it is hard to know whether or not to get an aftermarket warranty, most cost $1500-$2000, have a hefty deductible, and often times don't pay for themselves, unless a tranny goes out or something traumatic like that. The X's have their glitches, as all cars do, and you need to consider whether or not it is worth it to YOU as the owner to have peace of mind with a warranty. With a new car...the factory warranty is fine with me. With a used car (w/o factory warranty, or expired), I'd probably go with an aftermarket one, but shop carefully, and read the fine print ... and most importantly, if they can't specifically give you a list of items that are covered and NOT covered, keep looking. Get those in writing...save you some disputes later one.
Good luck with your search. Buying a car is sooooo much fun!

RE: Possible Purchase
Thanks for all of the comments guys!
I'm not picky when it comes to cars. I like a wide variety and look into anything that strikes my eye. This is a sharp looking vehicle and has most of the options I want (again minus a sunroof). Being that this is a 'luxury' car with a manual transmission in the town I live in, I should be able to use that as a great negotiation tool.
I don't want to write the vehicle off yet. I have yet to see it in person and haven't felt the severity of the this vibration. A lot also rests upon what they will give me for my current vehicle. I purchased this Explorer at this dealer 3 years ago trading in another Explorer and they gave me an excellent deal. So as a returning customer I hope to get just as good of a deal.
If this vibration does turn out to be major and needs tended to and I like the car, arrangements will be made to find a solution. I plan to head home this weekend to take a look at it.
Again thanks for all the help and thanks FJT for looking that up!

Welcome, IMO you should have a decent leg to stand on. To me that car is overpriced but than again in certain areas cars are worth more/less so I don't really know too much about where you live. I paid 13,600 or something like that for my sport 3.0 auto back in september of 06 so to me that is kind of high priced. I did have 54k miles or so when I bought her though...
