I posted a month or so ago about my power steering getting stiff in spots and after I tracked down a steering rack the problem went away. Are there some sensors that could have caused this? Here is the link to my original post.

Don't know if this helps, but my wife had what sounds like a similiar problem with a 2002 X-Type when they first came out.
It took the dealer 3 tries to fix it since the car was new. Finally they figured out the power steering was defaulted on the hiway mode, i.e. stiffer than the around town. Hers was harder to operate, almost like no power steering around town.
They replaced that module and all was well once again. It also made the dash lcd displays much more visible and easier to read which was a very nice bonus..
