Anyone ever tried to change out their keyed ignition with a push button system? I wonder what would be involved?

 

Easiest way is to pickup a kit and just run it to the hot and ignition wires. You can still use the key to start, or the button. I did it once on an old car.

 

I found this website StarDrive - Push Button Ignition System and I'm thinking about doing it. I want to find a schematic of the STR ignition first.

 

Usually there are 4 wires running to the ignition switch, but I have never messed with a S-Type

 

I miss the push button start on my Z, well that and never having to take my keys out of my pockets or backpack. But I don't miss it enough to spend $400. Curious to see how it works out for you though.

 

You could always go retro and fit a MKII dash, the push button is in the center right.

 

I have everything at home diagram wise. Remind me to post it tonight.

You're still going to need to get in the car and turn the key to ignition position 2. All you can do in an S-Type is mount an extra "push to start" button in it. So key in, turned to pos 2. press button to actually crank the starter.
