Questions
So just bought a 2002 jaguar 4.0, the guy I bought it from said the transmission needed rebuilt well of course I watched a bunch of videos about just changing out the transmission fluid so I drained the fluid a lot of the videos I watched must have been on the 3.0 or something cuz it didn't show that it had a removable transmission pan, when I look up to see videos about it there isn't many that I could find a lot of them are for Jaguar x-types or XJ types not just for the S-Type 4.0, I will obviously have many questions as I go through this process so I'm hoping this forum can help I'm very car knowledgeable but I've never worked on a jaguar and the things I've read on here seem like they're a little different, the car when put into any gear creeps the RPMs rev up but it doesn't move very much, my first question is is there a filter of some sort in that transmission pan also I know that the ls and the Thunderbird have a lot of interchangeable parts or so I've read and I know when you go to a auto parts store if you say jaguar typically the price is way higher just because the name so if anybody's got like some basic stuff that's they know is compatible with Jaguar from the Thunderbird or can point me in the right direction of some videos for the transmission, also I was trying to buy a repair manual or like a Hanes book for it but also I keep finding is the ones you can download are those any counts is anybody tried those or does anybody know where I can buy a good repair book for the 2002 V8 thank you very much

One little caution to make sure we're talking about the same transmission. About midway through 2002, Jaguar made a lot of changes, including switching to a 6HP26 6-speed transmission, which is a totally different animal. It also has a removable pan, but the filter is integral to the pan, not separate like most transmissions. Look at the left side of the bezel at the base of the shift lever to be sure. If labeled 2-3-4, that's a 5-speed (D=5). If labeled 2-3-4-5, that's a 6-speed (D=6).
+1 on Karl's excellent information.
Be sure you loosen the fill plug BEFORE draining the gearbox fluid.

As Karl pointed out, there are differences depending on the vehicle and engine fitted.

One of the main issues with the 5R55N is excessive wear in one or both servo bores causing damage to the intermediate and overdrive bands through insufficient pressure from the servo(s) to fully apply the band(s). The gearbox case can be machined to accept steel sleeves to correct the issue.
