Default replaced fuel pump but its still not starting

I replace the electronic fuel pump I got on ebay. I replace relays R8 and R15 - fuse F47 in the truck has been replaced. I sparayed starting fluid in the intake and it started for for about 10 seconds. Has anyone else had this problem? Can I please get some advice, I need the car to run so I can start my new job

Did you change the fuel filter?

Buying a used fuel pump is a gamble. Did you test it in the vehicle? Turn ignition to run but don't start. You should hear the pump run for about 2 seconds.

If you don't hear any sound it's one of two issues; electrical; fuse, relay or inertia switch) or the pump is bad.

No I did not change the fuel filter - do you know where it is located? - I'm going to get a fuel pressure tester this afternoon and check that - the fuel pump I bought on ebay was new - have you heard that the fuel pump is the same as the Ford one? Are there other fuses that effect the fuel pump besides in the trunk? When I turn ignition to run but don't start and I should hear the pump run for about 2 seconds - will I hear that when I'm in the drivers seat? I have a quarter tank of gas, is that enough gas? thanks for your help

How about some non-mechanical advice? Arrange a ride or borrow a car so you're not working in FullPanicMode(tm). Then you can correctly diagnose and correct the problem. At the moment, it sounds like a whirlwind of parts-lobbing, with a fuel pump and relays and fuses and who knows what else.

What were the original symptoms? What made you decide to change the fuel pump? Any relevant history?

Take a deep breath and tell us the rest of the story. We don't judge, except for people with unruly foliage in their yards. There's no excuse for that...

The fuel filter is behind and up underneath the left rear wheel. If it has never been changed, it is a good idea to do so even though it may not be your problem. Having to push fuel through a dirty / clogged fuel filter can definitely shorten the lifespan of any fuel pump....

Jon, I fear you have your S-Type mixed up with my X300's!
S-Type 3.0L fuel filter is behind the left front wheel, IIRC.

IIRIC, please forgive!

(of course, we don't know whether the OP has the 3.0L or the 4.2L, though I doubt there's a difference in fuel filter p/n or location)

Man,.......I have ALOT of trees on my acreage! Even though I just removed 17- 90~100' ers from the front yard. We likey stomping around in the forest! Sometimes wearing only Thom Mccann work boots, undies on the head and a large smile!!! I believe somewhere around here is a pic of that riding that Deere, Zane so eagle eyed in the corner of my garage! Hahaha

Now back to the topic on hand . Zane is correct on Jons accidental typo of left rear wheel. Fuel filter is located behind left front wheel inner wheel well. There are How To's here with pics and videos! Even a video on youtube from fellow member vance580.

Gotta find my rusty ole loppers now...........

thanks for the help yall and the personal advice I didn't ask for kr98664 - I got a fuel pressure tester that I will use tomorrow after I replace the fuel filter. Does anyone know if there are any fuses that effect the fuel in the fuse compartment by the front passengers foot. One more question has anyone used the ford electronic fuel pump in there 2004 S-Type?

If you swapped out the metal pump in the assembly you might not have done the work correctly.

No, no fuses in cabin,

I already advised you to check the inertia switch drivers side foot well and yes you can hear the woosh from drivers front seat or put someone's ear at the rear passenger seat.

PS - Karl already gave you good additional guidance.

And check all your fuel line connections at the fuel pump. Make sure they are fully seated into the assembly.

The pump is fairly quiet, especially with its location. Try removing the rear seat bottom to hear it better.

Rick and Zane,

My humblest apologies for my incorrect statement regarding the location of the fuel filter on these S-Types. I was thinking of my wife's XK8. Gotta do a better job of keeping these forums separated in my head before I allow my fingers to respond....

Ha ha, Jon. I thought that was probably XK8 knowledge bleeding over, but since I had no factual notion of where the filter is on an XK8, I just went with the X300 as it was fitting.
Don't tell me Jaguar didn't fit a Schroeder valve to the fuel rail on the XK either?

Zane,

I do not recall if the 4.2 engine in my wife's XK8 has a Schroeder valve on the fuel rail or not since I have never had any fuel injection-related issues with it. I will try to remember to look for one the next time I am working under the hood. That will probably be first thing tomorrow morning if her new coolant expansion tank from rockauto.com shows up in this afternoon's mail....

IIRC the early cars had one then it disappeared with the later ones.
