Default replacing A/C on 2004 S type

I hope this topic isn't already all over the boards, I searched and couldn't find anything quite like it.

My sister-in-law owns a 2004 S type with about 74,000 miles on it. 3.0 liter engine. In excellent condition, she bought it used with about 24,000 miles.

Recently, her A/C system was not working well at city speeds, and would cause the cabin to fog so terribly that she could barely drive the car. She went to her Jaguar dealer and they charged her $3500.00 to replace the compressor, and some other components. I haven't seen the repair bill yet, but I hope at that price, they replace EVERY component!

Is this common? I used to be an ASE certified technician, and I cannot imagine what they would have done, short of a complete rebuild of the entire system, to warrant such a high price. She was mad, but of course paid it. She says they charged her $1300 for the compressor????? New at all the normal parts outlets, including NAPA a Jag compressor lists for about $350.

Help me understand what's going on here, or did she just get taken royally?? I'm pretty pissed about it and if I were my brother, (her husband) I'd be in there yelling my head off. Of course, he owns a BMW so he's also used to multi-thousand dollar repair bills!!!

You are NEW, so firstly welcome.

The scribe you have supplied is sooooo common,SADLY.

The aftermarket comp down here for my 01 S is $485. Fitting is about 1 hour, vac down and recharge is a standard $140, so approx $690 - $750 is what my a/c guy wants to replace mine. It is damp around the front seal, so on borrowed time.

I never even checked the Dealer, that is my real last port of call, and that call has been 15 years without being made.

Not sure of your actual location, but surely there are independent (I think thats the word) operators in your country the same as we have down here??.

An added insult is that the dealer networks down here for most car brands really want nothing to do with any car that is more than 5 years out of factory warranty. Most actively support the "Independent" guy down the street. This I know as I was the Parts Manager for a Jag dealer here a looooong time ago.

Yes welcome to the forum.

Grant mentioned good stuff above. I replaced the compressor in our 2005 a few years back. With a new OEM compressor (eBay, $150ish) couple cans of R134a, couple beers of my time I was under $300.00.

Sorry to read about the sister. The link below will help out with what is involved.
