Replacing standard radio in 2003 S-Type
Apparently my radio has quit working. I have power but no sound coming out of the speakers. I see a lot radios that look exactly like my radio, 2R83-18B876, but ending in AK, AG, etc.Is there a particular letter designation that I need? Does this matter? And if I install a new radio, do I need the code for to get working? Thanks.
https://www.terrysjag.com/category/S...CESSORIES.html Check this out. A factory reman ready to go. I buy from them. Very good service. They will know what you have to do.
Great find! I did not know anybody refurbished the factory stuff.
But I got to say at over $1500 I would consider upgrading the car with a more modern head unit with many more function's.
The factory stuff was not great quality to begin with but adequate.
You did not tell us if your car has navigation? But I think it does not since you mentioned "standard" radio?
If not you job will be much easier because you don't have all the other stuff integrated into the head unit like the navigation cars do.
What are you looking to spend?

I am just looking to replace the radio at this point and get it working again. Trips with no tunes is not how I like to travel!
I found one like the original removed from a similar car, for a new upgraded unit, for $60. I will switch them out and see if that was the problem.

You have to fit the same design head unit.
You can not upgrade to a satnav screen version or change a sat-nav version for a non screen version as the A/C controls are built into the screen.
Also from 05 model year (Jan 2004 build) onwards the head units will auto detect any other modules on the fiber optic system.
Before that they will not.
This includes the CD changer, Alpine amp, wired phone, bluetooth and unit voice control unit etc.
With the older nav screen version you can activate the modules in the hidden menue, however with the older non screen head units this has to be done using the Jaguar IDS software.

I am not trying to upgrade. Just trying to get radio working. I will install the used one that is like the one in the car this week and then get a radio code. Hopefully it is a problem with the current radio and I'll be back in business.
Yes I think a used radio will be the cheapest and easiest way to go. Just be aware that these used radio's are now all old too so you may have to go thru several before getting one with everything working.
It helps to tell us where you at too? In the US we don't have radio codes but I have read about them.

Check the speakers first!
The fine woven copper wires connecting the leads-in connector to the speaker cone wear out.
Though they may look continuous, they usually fail at the fixed end near the connector, away from the cone.
Verify the output to the speakers with a voltmeter.
Usually, can test speaker by touching the wire gently with a jumper while energized.
Re-soldering the broken wire to the terminal can extend the life for a year or more.
Use that time to find a deal on quality new speakers that fit (not always an easy task).

And then just quit sending sound to the speakers. It still shows the station it is tuned to, and you can see the volume go up and down. CD player shows it’s running, but no sound. I’m in the US so I believe I will need to get a code for the used radio I bought.
Speakers are a known failure on the XJ NOT on the S-Type of this era. I have had as many as 6 failed speakers on a 2006 XJ. It's real common on that generation of XJ. So possible but unlikely. The radio is NOT a quality piece and many failures have been reported. I had navigation and you don't but is there a separate amp for your system? Maybe the radio is OK but you have amp problems?

My experience with the mode of failure was X-Type.
The problem was copper. Non-ferrous. Cannot avoid work hardening.
20-year-old speakers. Just saying. Look before leaping.

I have a hard time believing that all my copper speaker wires failed at the same time? And it is my understanding that the amplifier for this radio is located inside the radio. I would think it’s much easier to change out the radio 1st instead of checking all the speakers.
If you figure out it might be the amp, try these folks in Michigan. https://sybesmas.com/services/ They repair the jag mirrors and all kinds of electronics for cars. I would be worth a call if you can't get what you want in a replacement.

Then you noticed.
If you buy a used 20-year-old radio, what happens if it still doesn't work? Is it the radio or something else?
Consider downloading the wiring diagram, identify the speaker output at the radio connector. Check the output with a voltmeter. (Back probe the connector.) Or apply a small voltage (3 to 5V), and listen for a thump ...
Please let us know how you resolve the problem.
The bad speakers come from the XJ and NOT the S-Type. Yes the wire breaks going from the voice coil to the speaker connections. They are easy to repair with just a quick bit of re-soldering. For some reason it's a very common failure on the XJ?

Installed a different radio yesterday...same result! Radio looks to be playing, everything worked, but just no sound. I also checked the fuses to the radio in the passenger foot area, that I found on a wiring diagram, and they were OK too. I guess I need to pull a door panel and look at a speaker....maybe test with another speaker. I'm stumped.
I called a Jag shop and the guy told me there was an amplifier, I said I read the standard radio didn't have a separate amp but he said it did, but he didn't know where it was. I think he's wrong?
