Default S-Type 2005 Diesel gearbox

My gearbox needs replacement. I have been searching for a used one but i came across 2 different ones. 4R83-7000-AE is one and 6R83-7000-AD is the other. I can not check the old gearbox for a part-number because i do not have the housing only the internals.

The part numbers i get are completely different. When searching for them online i get close to nothing. I can not enter vin either. Vin decoders don"t help as well, some think i have a V8.

A lot of the sites will be USA (or software for USA) but the diesel was never sold there (won't pass emissions) so probably very confused by your VIN.

There seem to be various gearboxes for the 05 Diesel, 4R83-7000-AE and 4R83-7000-AE for example. Does anyone know if there is a difference between both?

Looks like you put the same ref. twice! What did you actually mean? (I suspect 6R...)

Generally they will be mostly alike but some will have running changes (which might not might not matter to you) and some will be for a different engine (which will matter) such as with different internals (including software).

By way of example, a petrol V8 ZF is liable to be rather different.

Be aware of differences in the rear diff (gearing, at least), as they may affect the gearbox and its software.

(You can download - free - lots of tech stuff to help you figure this out if you want to really understand. Otherwise just get a matching gearbox.)

Trying to fit the wrong kind may result in it not working, of course!

BTW what's wrong with the current box? They're fairly tough and don't often fail but we do see examples where they've been incorrectly diagnosed as faulty.

OK . . . It's not April Fools Day, but I'll bite anyway . . . how come you have armsful of internals but no housings that stop the oily, coggy bits from falling on the floor? Y'see my MY07 TTD (yes, Diesel) came with a bulky metal a/t case that wears the appropriate number you seek. Why not read it and match it?

As hinted by [JagV8], a bargain buy online of a more common unit from a different Jaguar engine . . . or even much more common German donor . . . will be no bargain if incompatible either physically, or electronically via its firmware or software.

Best wishes,

Ken

Because i don't have the case! I only have the internals, i bought the car knowing i had to replace the gearbox.

transmission arrived and has been installed by now, i needed to order a flex disc since that went missing as well. I managed to program the key with a SKP-900 key programmer. Car started first turn of the key. It is running quite well actually. Nopw i have another problem. The gear selector cable seem to have stretched and the shifter does not light up when putting in drive. I guess i will need another cable. My next question is if the gear selector cable is the seems for all versions. Petrol and diesel.
