S Type 4.0 Intermittent No Start
Help!
I have a 2000 S Type 4.0
Owned since new, dealer maintained, 100K miles, garaged.
Car is like new/flawless (except for the minor detail of the no start thing!!!!)
Recently (6-9 months), it began intermittently not starting.
Cranks fine, just no start (not even a hint of wanting to....).
No pattern or other symptoms.
Will start fine 9 out of ten times, then not.
May start OK minutes, hours, or not for days later.
Dealer could not find problem (no codes, could not get symptom to repeat).
New battery.
This is a tragedy, great car is useless because it will strand you.
Has anyone else had this issue?
What are possibilities?
I don't want to randomly begin changing parts....
I will mention one thing, horn does not beep when I set alarm/lock.
Don't think it is related as that existed long before the problem began.

A failing fuel pump might not set a DTC.
Check for the PATS light on the dash top for rapid blinking when the no-start occurs.
If the light blinks rapidly for 60 seconds with the key 'on' then it will blink a 2 digit code after the 60 seconds. If you can get a DTC in the PTEC you might also see P1582 for a 'flight data recorder' logged in module. That will give you 37 frames of data for the 'EVENT' and can be read with WDS, IDS etc.
Check for water in the boot. I always punch a small hole near the battery if I see water in the boot as well as a boot lid and tail lamp reseal.

Hi
Thanks for reply,
No water in boot.
PATS light not blinking (lights solid when cranking, then dark).
Blinks slowly while armed, dark when unarmed.
Not sure about the other codes you discuss, would they be stored after event?
Dealer did not find any codes of an event.
As for fuel pump, this is purely a no start issue, car runs fine at all times (short and long trips of 150 miles+), wouldn't I see symptoms of fuel problem at other times?
Thanks
Ken
