From the TSB:

Q2-Can you tell me more about what is wrong with the vehicle?

A-Investigations have determined that 2005MY North American specification vehicles may be fitted
with a fuel tank that has inadequate thickness around the apertures and/or dimension concerns
that could lead to aperture distortion around the seals. Where the tank aperture sealing is
inadequate it is possible for the On Board Diagnostic leak detection system to sense this and
could result in illumination of the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) or a fuel odor. Fuel leaks are
most likely to occur only after a fuel tank has been fully filled with fuel.

TSB-R176.

Now the bad thing is the solution is a fuel tank replacement. Don't know if any new tanks are still available or not? Probably not. The recall usually is only good for 10-15 years after it's issued but again that can vary.

Thanks for feedback. This car did have the fuel tank replaced as part of the recall many many years ago. In 2020, the passenger side fuel pump assembly cap and o ring began leaking fuel and it was replaced by an indy mechanic successfully. Now the driver side cap and o ring are suspected of being the source of fuel leak when I top off the fuel. Raw gas drips from under car on driver side below tank. This car has also fought me tooth and nail on cel and lean codes, and I am reading posts on other threads that the leaking fuel tank caps and o rings WILL cause cel and lean codes. I need to remove the old cap clamp and get a new clamp and o ring. I could test this theory by leaving the back seat out and refueling the car to capacity and observe that cap, but I am reluctant to deliberately spill fuel, plus I would then want to burn off some fuel to feel more comfortable about opening it up. The issue is.......that worm clamp is really inaccessible and apparently a bear to remove. I'm looking for guidance.

Sorry you did mention before the tank was replaced under that recall. I missed that.
Can you get to a junk yard and see if you can find another S-Type to look at?
Do you currently have any codes? You posted about 0174 and 0171 lean codes but those won't be caused by fuel pump issues.

threads in this forum and on fb by many other s type owners claim that cel and lean codes exhibit with air leaking into the fuel piping with either fuel cap or these fuel tank cap leaks. I have fought and repaired literally everything on this particular car for years on and off for the lean codes. I've had it go away for a while and then reappear. Trust me, I'm well informed on the source of 0171 and 0174 and I've done it all. I now know that I have a leaking fuel tank cap.....I've got to get that fixed for safety and maybe just maybe the cel and codes will be effected.
