I have an S Type R 2002. I have been oferred a 6 speed ZF gearbox from a similar age S Type 4.2 . I am tempted to buy it as a spare but wondered if anybody knows if it will fit . I know that the Type R torque converter is beefed up but the gearboxes themselves look to be very similar down to one letter on the part number . Might I however have ratio or software issues ?

I would think a software issue for sure.

 

I'm sure you can swap out the TCM if necessary.
don't know about ratios .
id say best to talk to a trans or ZF specialist .
