I have a 2001 S-Type. I’m having an annoying problem starting the car most times. Sometime I can get the car started by putting the gear shift lever in "Neutral", push the brakes, and having someone rock the car;when it wouldn't start in "Park". This works some time, but after several tries and sometime a few hours. Some time it starts right away in "Park" but sometimes it fails to do so, then I have to start it in "Neutral" instead. The transmission selector lever sometime will not recognize and illuminate the “P” Park position. Sometime it will be in one position but the illuminated gear selector indicates another position. For example, if the gear shift lever is in Park, the “PRND” display may show “R”.
I had the car towed in and the shop installed a Neutral Safety Switch (no luck), same problems, had the automatic transmission selector cable bolts checked (the shop state they are fine). The shop is recommending a new Gear Shift Lever Assembly part XR817754 for $902.55 installed. I’m thinking and hoping a new Selector Lever Cable part XR833366 will resolve the problem. Have anyone experience this problem, and if so, what was the solution.

Hello thread, KittyCat01 I have a 2003 s-type V8(no Super Ch.) I'm having the same problem but I can't get mine to start. It turns over fine but won't start. And my gear shifter shows the wrong gear shift selection too and I can't get my doors to stay locked buy putting the key in the door. It keeps coming back up.. So I want to ask you did you ever get your problem resolved. Or is there anyone else my can shine some light on this situation? One guy told me this could be a transponder issue but I can't find the battery in the transponder.

 

Follow the previous advice here for the shifter-related issue. Then use Search about the remote / door locking/unlocking.
