S type wont go into top gear
Hi, I have a 1999 S type, It has an intermittent fault that stops it going into top gear.
If you start the car and do not stop it goes into top gear okay, however if you stop at lights when you start off again it will not.
It has been at the service garage and they have said because it goes into top gear sometimes it is most probably a transmission computer problem and that I could try changing it to see if that resolves the problem.
Any suggestions on what I should do to try isolating and resolving this problem would be much appreciated.

Move the shifter into the manual position 4 and drive the car. FYI it will up and down shift on its own. One of the most common problems is that the bolts for the shifter cable comes loose causing the linkage to misalign.
Also, change the fluid, many times, to get the concentration level back where it should be.
Its a Ford trans, and tough as nails, but it LUVS fresh fluid, and if it dont get fresh fluid every 2 years, it plays up just like you are getting now.
Worked for both mine.

And note: it hasn't got a trans computer. It's the main PCM that also controls the trans (unlike the models with the ZF trans).
Doesn't sound like a computer problem at all, though.
I'd sit with OBD and look at sensors, fuel trims and everything, hoping for clues.
