Default Second STR in the Corral.

I purchased another 2003 S-type R last week. The body and interior are in great shape, so I couldn't resist.
The challenge for this car is that the engine has supposedly thrown a rod.
I was on a business trip last week, so I haven't been able to start assessing how bad the engine has been damaged.

I've been researching engine builds, and the difficult part will be determining the budget I want/need to stick to in order to get the reliability and perhaps a few mods for more power. (Hence, my thread asking about engine rebuilds.)

My findings so far show that putting in a new engine, or building up a modified engine ends up costing far more than the car is worth, and still more than if you paid a bit more to purchase a lower mileage running car.

Another fun project...

I already put a LS3 in my 2000 S-type. It's still not running and now I have another new project.
This car needs to be a "Family" car and my 2000 S-type is a "toy" to play with.

I would look for a used 4.2L. Ebay has several starting at about $2K.

The back seat is a bit small for a family car. Give it to me and I will trade you for a 95 buick lesabre

I have just about every engine listed on E-bay mapped out and put in an Excel spread sheet. Interesting correlation between asking price, supposed condition and mileage. Any used engine could be a can of worms. Seldom if ever is there any information regarding how the car was driven and maintained. I really believe it would be a crap shoot to purchase one of those engines and just stick it in the car. At a minimum I would put in new timing chains, drop the pan and look for sludge and check the bearings, + new oil pump. Easily could spend $1+K to be sure the engine is in OK shape.

I would rather put that money into a semi-custom rebuild where I can control the parts I replace and can guarantee that the engine will last. Or perhaps purchase one of the few new long-blocks I've located.

OK but for $1250 the parts alone might be worth it?? Only has 76K miles.

How would the junk yard know how the car was driven or if it was taken care of??

Any reason you are worried about the timing chains?
No reported problems after Jaguar updated the chains to dual roller and the third generation metal tensioners.

I am looking for an engine, not an automatic transmission. I guess you didn't properly read the posting.

I wouldn't put any used engine with more than 60K miles into one of my cars without thoroughly going through it. Without knowing the history of the engine, it is worth it to replace as many moving parts as you can afford.

That's one of the problems with a used engine! Recyclers don't know the history of the engines they sell. You can luck out or end up with a dud that dies a couple years later.

Way, way too much money! I could purchase a complete higher HP streetable engine like a LSA or LS9, put that engine in the S-type and be able to put money back in the bank!

For this STR, I am looking at a $4K to $6 budget. More than that, and I might as well part out the car!

Hey Joe....

Did you buy the black one that was on ebay? Or the silver one in CO?

I MIGHT be able to help here. I have something up my sleeve.

PM me or call me if you still have my info.

Take care,

George

No, a green one from Georgia. Was sold on E-bay to another buyer. I had bid on it and gave up because it was getting to expensive, Buyer fell through and I received a second chance offer and couldn't resist.
