Default Setting the Timing

Is there anyway to set the timing without having to take off the timing cover?

It is always helpful to advise the Forum on the MY, engine size and type and number of kilometres/miles on the vehicle when asking for assistance.

You must remove the cam covers and rotate the engine in a clockwise direction when viewed from the driver's position to determine if the cams are timed correctly.

The JTIS Workshop Manual has details on the procedure.

Just to be clear, if you are standing in front of the vehicle, the engine must be rotated in a clockwise direction only. Rotating in an anti-clockwise direction can cause damage to the main crankshaft bearings.

In order to remove the LH (driver's side) cam cover, use a tool designed to disconnect the fuel line 'quick-connect' at the chrome connector. When reassembling the connector, be sure it 'clicks' into place so you have no fuel leaking onto the engine. It can be fiddly, so take your time.

Was this not covered in the OP's last post?
