shifter assembly fix
Is there a metal shift linkage that replaces the plastic component that frequently breaks for the 2000 s type 4.0? I have read that there are replacements for the 2004 and above but not the earlier years.

Welcome to the forum Rob,
It is the early, pre 03, cars that have the problem with the broken plastic part here's a couple of links shift.kit.stype - Shifter Repair Kit Jaguar s Type Shifter Repair Kit All Metal Durable | eBay

The later ones seem not to break. The earlier ones are prone to breaking quite often due to heaving on the shifter. And that's often due to failing to use the parking brake. (The fix is to use that brake.)
Just be careful! The reason it breaks is because it's a safety joint.
It breaks before something much more expensive does. So making that piece stronger is fine but don't get rough with the shifter after that because that part won't break next time.
You did not say but many times you can’t move the shifter because the parking pawl gets locked when the car is parked on an incline. Then the weight of the car is locking the parking pawl. Try rocking the car gently back and forth while gently trying to move the shifter.
You can help prevent this by parking on flat surfaces or applying the parking brake BEFORE putting the car in park.
