Single Use Bolts?
Hey gang. Are the transmission pan bolts single use? I serviced the transmission in my car with a new pan, but old bolts and it's leaking. I called an independent shop that specializes in Jaguars for an estimate to have them fix it and they're telling me the bolts need to be replaced. It's a reputable shop, I'm sure they're correct, but I'd not heard this. Do you guys servicing your own cars use new bolts with transmission services?
What other services should require new bolts? I have a leaky valve cover gasket I'm going to need to do soon. Are those also single use? Why?

Zf recommends new bolts because of possible breakage. If you torqued the bolts in proper sequence then you have another problem. Retorque them and see. Bolt stretch is what the issue might be. The sequence is very important. New bolts will not hurt though if you decide to go that route. Also double check that the seal sleeve is not weeping onto the pan area. I used my original zf bolts and had no issues. After the fill was completed and trans warm i retorqued
Was breakage the issue? Working from potentially faulty memory, I thought there was an update to a new style of bolt head. I vaguely remember the original style was easy to strip out.

you may be right Karl. I think the new style are t40. Maybe old t27 or 30. I have t40
I think ZF said the early small Torx head bolts tended to seize into the Aluminum transmission case. When trying to break them free this corrosion required more torque than the small bolt head could take. So they had a lot of complaints because the bolt heads stripped out. Note if this happens to you remember the pan is plastic and you can break the plastic off around the bolts and use vice grips to unscrew the bolts.
The newer bolts are still steel so same corrosion problem but with the larger Torx head on them they can take more torque without problems. I have been using the new bolts and applying a small amount of anti-size to the threads. I have never had any problems removing the smaller bolt heads but I think it depends on how much salt the car has seen.

Thanks for the replies. It's the ZF6HP26. The first time I did this service (on my XJ) one of the bolts was seized in the case and I had to drill it and helicoil it. If that was an issue, makes sense if they changed bolts to prevent it.

You've been on the forum long enough that I shouldn't have to remind you about protocol. There's no need to reply stating the obvious, i.e. me being right. Think of how much bandwidth would get tied up, bringing the entire internet to a screeching halt.
