I have a 2003 Stype R with 107,000 miles on it and my concern is a couple of things, first I have noticed that the car does burn a quart or so between oil changes 4-5000 miles and I use 5w-30 Pennzoil Synthetic..I have also noticed when I give a little gas and go say abt 100mph or more I always smell a burning smell coming through the vents. Anything under 90 its not a problem. It seems when I work the engine at high speeds which isnt often, i get a whiff of it, is that oil shearing that I smell or is it the piston rings starting to wear. I have had the car since 78,000 miles and with age I get a little concerned and I want to stay ahead of any potential issues. If Yes, how much of a job should I expect to have head work done on it if necessary. I bought the car for 10,000 and i'm a little weary about the cars durability long term. I love the car but is it a good idea to expect to have that type of work on a car that should be built like a tank. Could it be something else because I dont have any oil leaks or anything, could something else contribute to that.I know I need to change the water pump soon...I don't have overheating but could that be it..I don't think so because I would smell a strong odor of coolant..Is there anyway to make a diagnosis before the problem gets worse?
Ps--Is there any supercharger maintanance there needs to be done?

I get the same coolant odor myself. Occurs after a long trip. I got a low coolant light after a long trip about 2 months ago. Filled it up and took another trip. Haven't had it again.
I paid 10k in 2/09 for mine. I have a 3.0 V6.

What are you doing 90 mph for? Don't you know that you kill twice as many bugs traveling 90 mph than staying below 70? (just kidding, keep it up!).

Usa speed limits.
You will not get ""Durability long term.,at those speeds.Transmissions aren't what they use to be. Nice cars but none of the cars made for the public can take abuse. But enjoy it while they last!

You're kidding, right? The current technology we all enjoy will allow a Hyundai to cruise all day at 100... And the tires will hold up as well... might get a ticket or two but you won't hurt the car....

MARK,
Listen to BRUTAL. I got the same oil smell from my IMT o-rings seeping. Under speed oil gets on the manifold then you smell oil inside. Since you don't have those on the R, I would look at the cam covers.

2000 4.0 S-type
I have the same car with a 4.0 and have not had any smells or leaks. It even has the Ford transmission and when I checked it the other day, "No leaks".
But I'm not out to kill anything! I have tires that are rated for 149 mph but I don't believe everything I read. But I bet my valve covers will leak in time.

Have you looked in the rear view mirror? Could be the smell of the grim reaper getting closer and closer

Living in the Sunshine "Hot" State
I'm surprised you haven't had the AC problems yet. I've read about these cars in Florida's heat in the summer . I lived in Miami when I was a kid know how hot it gets. Oil gets even thinner in the heat and may seep under high speeds.

Ummm, hate to break it too ya, but there is a WHOLE LOT different between a 2000 and a 2003, not even mentioning the differences between a standard and a R.....

2003 s-type
Yes,the 2003 is bullet proof from what I heard. You still can blow a seal if you try. More speed = More vibration. My 2000 piece of crap is still hanging in there which really is great. I'm aware that it was the model with the AC problems "being one of many problems. " I checked behind and all around the cam covers and didn't get any oil. I have 45,700. Guess I'm lucky. He has a good amount of mileage and maybe he drives faster which builds up pressure and pushes oil.
