Bob, My 12 year old son said I'll have a change in heart one day and "have to" pick up a later model "R" code Jag when I have to give him my STR when he's 16. LOL!

Sorry guys, the new Mustang GT 5.0L is NOT direct injected.

Ford projects that they will switch to DI around 2014. We've had one in our R&D shop, so it's confirmed returnless SMPFI, not DI.

That said, I would say it's the lighter weight and perfectly selected gearing for the power/torque curve that makes it so freaking fast.

And the sound? So much better than Camaro SS as well--I've driven 3 of those in the past year during R&D. You should hear it past 6600rpm. I'll take the new Mustang any day over the new Camaro SS. For around US$36k, the new Mustang GT 5.0 is absolutely phenomenal. I would even concur with the conclusion in Autoblog's early article:

http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/29/2...t-first-drive/
The bottom line is this: Ford is done messing around. With the release of the 2011 Mustang GT 5.0 there are no more "Yeah, but..." reasons to buy any other pony car. Only serious Mopar-philes would choose the drastically more expensive and substantially worse Dodge Challenger SRT-8 over the Mustang GT. Aside from looks, we can't think of a single area where the similarly priced but slightly more expensive Chevy Camaro SS beats the Mustang. Speed, handling, soundtrack, brakes, interior (the GT is actually creeping into Audi levels of interior sophistication – look at those seats!), fit and finish – you name it, the Mustang's the superior sports car.

Speaking of Audi, the 5.0 makes the 354-hp
S5 look like an overpriced slowpoke. We've driven both cars in anger and the 2011 Mustang GT is not only faster, but is actually rear-wheel drive, not a FWD platform fitted with Quattro all-wheel drive. Want us to go even further? We'd prefer the Mustang GT to a BMW 650i. Sure, the BMW has dash leather and... iDrive. But (again), the GT makes more power (the 650i manages 360 hp), handles better and is quieter unless you're really belting the throttle. Also, Sync's a whole lot better than iDrive, even the much improved new iDrive. Not only that, but the GT's new 5.0-liter V8 engine is in another league than (previous) competitors like the Nissan 370Z and Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8. Getting the point? In 2011, the Mustang GT is the car to beat. Welcome back, 5.0.

Sounds like some "strategery"on his part. ;>)) I remember being 12 but all we had was a 5 year old station wagon. Hard to get very worked up over that. It did have Thunderbird engine though. That was "hot" in those days. I eventually got a very old 48 Ford sedan to drive once I was 17. The big old back seat in that puppy was great for a LOT of things. Certainly a lot better than a STR! ;>))

LOL! Hee hee...on the STR's small back seat. My 98 Mazda MPV minivan still holds the riegns on my favorite most accomodating back seat. Shoot! quick, hide...I think I hear a moderator coming.

Wow! I assumed the 011 Stang was direct injected due to 410 hp and 390 lbs/trq. coming from a N/A 5.0. I know it has 11:1 C/R. Man, they really got that thing (5.0) screwed on reeeeal nice.

Well folk's just fed that 'Cat' a 2014 Camaro SS (judging by the rear light's and front/rear styling) and was very impressed with the results. I initially saw the Camaro a bit far off, crept up to it and slower pulled away twice, and it wasn't until we hit a red light that I knew it was 'on'. I had left the car in 'D' pushed my 'S' button and as soon as the light turn green we both took off, he had pulled forward ever so slightly up until roughly 50 mph where I began to feel the power coming in, I pulled away at about 70 mph and the race ended at 120 mph. It was a little over 1/4 mi race that ended with the SS roughly 30~35 yards behind me I must admit though I was slightly nervous that there was an ever-so-slight possibility I might get out-ran, but that wasn't the case. I am now fairly confident that any well taken care of STR can outrun 'most' Camaro SS'.

Disclosure: SS run was conducted in 29 Palms CA., roughly @ 4000 ft of elevation, early in the morning, off-brand 91 octane in the tank.

Just following up, I take it you haven't had a change of heart and Bob is without an STR.

Hey Mike,

Seth sold his STR a couple of years ago saying his priorities had changed and he needed to take fewer risks while behind the wheel and concentrate on his business and his family. I don't think he ever returned to the forum....

Thanks Jon,

I saw some of his old messages and he was toying with getting an XKR. The last message I saw was in 2013.

@joycesjag I appreciate the concern but I live in the desert it was early in the morning there wasn't any traffic around and if he was willing to push his car that fast he must of been willing to deal with the consequences that comes with doing that, as so am I. I appreciate the advice though and I have heard of 'Riski' and with all due respect I have heard he is no longer with us.

@rickyrich007 Good on you man, I used to think those car's would be great challengers and indeed they are but our Jags are just more robust

I remember well what prompted this too.

I think he finally realized that he was out of control when he spotted another couple in a car "calling in on him". He realized that he was puttin his life, medical license and entire family at risk with all of these stop light races.

Pay attention folks.

Unless you are on a very remote and deserted road with zero chance of other traffic don't do it.

Even then DO realize the risk involved. I have been involved in fully organized and legally sanctioned open road racing several times. Even with all of that a couple we had dinner with the night before paid the ultimate price the following day.

You wanna go fast? Get involved with a good organization that rents track time and don't skimp on the safety equipment, People get killed every year at track events. Know that!
