We've heard talk of shops being able to offer a tune, but has anyone here in the Us actually gotten one? At the current time I believe in us tuners as much as the tooth fairy or Santa claus. Anyone have a tune and have actual dyno verified results?

I have looked for years and a few have claimed to be able to do it, but NO ONE has ever proved it. Several black box tuners and again no dyno graphs just HP promises or estimates.

Now that the S Type is getting older I don't think it will ever be solved.

I snooped around the XFR forum. A member recieved a Eurotoys ECU tune and was dissatisfied with the results. He believed his car lost power. I'll check back with him to see if this has changed. ChrisSTR has been in touch with a popular and respectable dyno-tuner in Long Island, NY. He advertises tunes for most makes, including Jaguar. He admits no experience with the STR but is willing to give it a try at a very reasonable cost. I hope to have them tune my STR's ECU after installing an intercooler circuit cooler ("Chiller Killer").

Nice. Good to see someone is moving forward w the killer chiller on the s type board. Definitely do a thread on that letting us know what we need to do to install one.

Though a "Chiller Killer" can be had for $650, "Mafioso" is working on his own variant. Parmount Performance (UK) has done extensive tuning of the STR's ECU. They'll accept an ECU from abroad for a limited (out of chassis) tune for 500+ pounds. Coupled with a modded exhaust, Bloaks from across the pond have gotten 475 certified dyno chp from Paramounts Performance ECU tune. I tried without success to contact the person with this STR. His brother showed it on the dyno on YouTube.

And sadly, even though I had convinced myself that I wanted an STR, this is half the reason I ended up buying a 535i. (The other half being the night and day modernity of the interior and electronics).

Take care,

George

Wait! I found the solution to our ECU dreams...I read George's post when my eyes were drawn to the bottom of the page. Here, I noticed an advertisement of GFChips; claiming 60 hp from their chip alone. Eureka! We're saved.

It would seem to me from the outset getting more power from a standard as-fitted petrol engine is well nigh impossible. Just about everything you could do to it will contravene some regulation about pollution or noise. It's also highly probable that Jaguar has already thought about getting the max. from any given petrol engine within commonsense limits of durability.
The situation with diesel engines is very different. Not only can you remap a diesel to produce a lot more power, but some manufacturers will even offer three different states of "tune", e.g. the Renault Megane which can be had with a 1.5litre dci diesel engine, making either 70, 86, or 108horse. The possibibility of damage to the engine from extracting more power from it is also much less with a diesel.
It would seem getting more power in practice from a petrol engine means either fit a much bigger (in cc) engine, or supercharge it. Turbocharging will get you part-way, but there is always the "lag". They don't have that 'instant' low-rev. response to the pedal that superchargers have. STR owners know all about that!

Yesterday I met with the owner of Lomotion (Poughkeepsie NY). He travels the country and planet tuning high performance cars. His friend has a Mustang dyno down the road from his shop. He said he'll put together the necessary software and equipment to tune my STR. He knows I'm a member of this forum and if the STR is able to recieve an adequate performance tune, he'll work out an affordable dyno or bench tune for all.

Nice!

Also about the killer chiller... There's several threads on how to build your own for approximate $200. I just don't have the time to do so, but it doesn't look hard. If mafioso can do it at a lower cost, awesome!
