Question Stalling

2004 S-Type sometimes stalls at a stoplight when I have driven it about a half mile. It won't start again and acts like it is flooded. I come back to it after a couple of hours and it starts up just fine.
What can be causing this and what is the cure?

Could be many things, but I would start with swapping the fuel filter - which is a good thing anyway.
I assume you checked already with a code reader?

Thanks, Peter. I have not yet checked the codes. Will do. But this car needs to have its codes cleared; there are about 30 of them.
Also I've been busy with the coolant system. Can't seem to locate the lead for the coolant level sensor.

Don't clear the codes until you have very carefully noted all the details for every code, because when you clear it is possible to get into a state where the car can't report them but is in a bad state.

The underlying design is that you ONLY clear when you have fixed the cause(s).

Note down all the codes, then clear them, then run the car and note down, which codes came back.

OBDII readers are unbelievable cheap these days - in the range of AUD$15 e.g. on Aliexpress.

How many of those codes start with a P? Those are the only ones which will affect the engine. There may be other codes present, starting with C (for chassis), etc.

Please report the P codes and we will see what we can do to help. Make sure to get the entire 5 digit code, such as P0301. Some scanners may give definitions that are too generic, so please make sure to report the actual code.

How old is your battery? With so many codes present, I wonder if low system voltage (due to a marginal battery) is a contributing factor.

Do a quick check of the charging system, too. What year is your car? Your initial message said 2004, but your profile says 2002. For any early model, you should read about 13.7v at the battery. For 2003+, you should see approximately 14.5v after engine start, slowly decreasing to 13.5v after a few minutes.

Check this thread:

That was on a late model, but I think the general principles apply to early models, too.

I will have to clear the codes. There are 41 of them, last recorded before I had the car in the shop to fix oxygen sensors and misfiring. A lot of the codes are duplicates, but all start with P.
Fortunately I live in a place where every auto parts store will check codes for free. (But it's also a hot climate here and currently sitting at 15 degrees Fahrenheit, so I'm not about to venture out today.)

Thanks,

MM
