Steering Column Chatter

Steering Column Chatter
2001 S type, v8
When the steering column retracts or extends and the wheel is in full up tilt there is a chattering noise. I can feel it on the steering wheel housing.
If the tilt is moved down a slight amount, the chattering goes away. This happens both when the motor is running or not and also both in the automatic turn off the key mode of using the knob on the left side of the column. Putting my head down near the fire wall the sound seems to be coming from near the steering wheel!
I am considering spraying a silicone lubricant up into the area, but an concerned about electrical shorting or/and contact with the air bag.
I appreciate any recommendations or comments.
Thanks,
Allan

You can give it a try but your car is now 13 years old. The mechanism is worn and needs to be replaced. Common on cars with the auto exit feature because that moves the seat and steering wheel every time the car is used.
Since you have the early car I would get the Lincoln LS part as they are very cheap in the junk yards. Just be aware that another used one will most likely be worn too!
