Default Steering Column Lock Problem

I have an intermittent fault with the electronic steering column lock on my 1999 S Type. This problem does not only affect Jaguar S types. Nissan 370Z also have this problem with their electronic locks. However, some owners have resorted to disconnecting the electronic lock mechanism. Below is a link to one Nissan owner's solution.

DIY: 2009 - 2010 Steering Wheel Lock Fix w/ Pics! - Nissan 370Z Forum

The Nissan owner isolated the wire that allowed the car to start without the steering lock engaging.

My question is - has anyone attempted to isolate the wire or wires that would permanently disengage the lock on an S type . I am a little bit apprehensive fiddling around hit and miss only to do more harm than good. The car is so full of electrics!

Thanks. Any help would be appreciated.

It's very rare on our cars so just fix it. Not relevant what the other make problems are.

Hi Omoledestronger
I have been waiting for radiator hose parts so I cannot test the steering lock properly. As it doesn't happen all the time it is better to post after fully testing. However. if you take out fuse 19 in the cabin fuse box (near the accelerator pedal). It is in the second row blue 15 (third from the front from memory). This fuse works the steering column motor.

You need to do this when the steering column is unlocked otherwise, I believe it stays engaged and locked. This may be only a temporary fix if a new steering column lock motor is required. These are expensive and may not be the real fault as in my car the mechanism works albeit off and on. Your Jag is 2003 and mine is 1999. So it is worth checking in your Jaguar handbook (in case the fuse is in a different place) or, there is a downloadable manual on the forum.

I have tested when the steering lock was working and it seems to work (as long as you don't need the steering lock working). But I have not fullly tested it as without the radiator parts it can't be driven. However, I have turned the motor over, taken the keys in and out without any problem. But did not want to post this as a certainty until it is fully on the road and I could be positive.

If you try this and it works for you. Post a reply. You could find out before me.

Good luck Paul
