Default Steering Wheel Play

Hi folks,
covered 500 miles now in my MY2000 v6 S and enjoying the experience very much, there is very little to complain about and only a couple of niggles.
One definite issue though is a very small amount of left-right play in the steering wheel which is not only irritating and possibly unsafe on a long journeys but also I suspect will be an MOT failure.
I hunted around the forums and was all set to buy upper and lower steering column from ebay but after sitting SWMBO in the drivers seat and looking under the bonnet it *seems* to me that the play is at the point where the steering column connects to the rack, i certainly cant see any track rod movement.
The question is does that sound like a new rack, the lower part of the column or something else ie more scientific diagnosis required?
I had the car up off the front wheels a few weeks ago and was checking for steering play but couldnt seem to see any.

all answers /suggestions welcome

regards

Steve

Does the left-right wobble increase with increased speed? Happened to me, and root cause was both front wheels were "not true" due to potholes or a previous accident. New rims took 90% of the wobble out. Just switching fronts with rear wheels may eliminate some contributors.

Hi Warspite, no there is no wobble at any speed that I can notice - just the play
